I received an email from Microsoft Online Services <billing@microsoft.com> today. This is what it said:

Dear Hotmail customer, Update your billing information!

We have been unable to charge your credit card for your Hotmail Microsoft Online Services. The following credit card is the current payment method on your billing account.

To avoid possible suspension of your services or to reactivate suspended services, please immediately provide a valid credit card and a current expiration date.

To view or change your billing account, go to https://billing.microsoft.com

HOTMAIL IS FREE!!!! Don't give these people your credit card information! The email is obviously fake; the Hotmail butterfly is noticibly absent and hotmail would never ask you to pay for their services.... unless you have the premium account. I've seen lots of these fake email from paypal and ebay but never Hotmail. Just a heads up in case anyone else sees this in their inbox!

They are branching out to banks also. Got a few pretending to be from mine, plus some of the credit card companies too. The thieves must be hurting for money, poor little things! Unless I'm the one to actually log on to the secure website, nobody gets any info from me. Emails get reported or deleted.

Do not pay this. I got fooled thinking once it was an official Microsoft website and it locked up my whole computer. It even prevented me from going to Norton and getting a virus protection update. My local provider had to come and get rid of the virus.

My colleague and her husband were recently hit with $500 in charges on their debit cards purporting to be Hotmail fees. When she called MSN, they told her this was a scam that they were aware of and are investigating with the authorities. The interesting thing is that neither of them replied to any emails. The thieves are running random credit card numbers to see if any hit. When they find an open account, they keep going until it's closed. My friend checks her bank account on-line every day, and caught this before their account was completely drained. Obviously, they will get their money back, but it will take a week! It pays to be very vigilant with your accounts!
