I used Hotwire to book a room at the Universal Sheraton last year for $86/night. That might be your best approach to finding a good hotel rate near USH. There aren't many inexpensive hotels nearby that I can think of.

From this HOTELS page on the Universal site, I think the Marriott Burbank and Beverly Garland Holiday Inn will give you the best rack rates of the hotels listed there. But definitely consider using Hotwire or Priceline. If you do the necessary research on sites like BetterBidding.com, you can probably get pretty good deals.

Just a suggestion, Universal is a short train ride ( think it cost $1.50 one way) from Central hollywood. Not sure if that might broaden your options. Have fun!
