we are going to be going down to williamsburg for a couple of nights in May. dh and I have been several times before, but never with the 3 kids (DS age 4, DD and DS age 2). we're just planning on doing colonial williamsburg. Any hotel recommendations?

We stayed at the Woodlands. It is within the Colonial WB compound. It was your run of the mill hotel that had a nice continental breakfast. There are busses that shuttle you to various stops within CW. One recommendation for lunch or dinner. We did both meals at Seasons Restaurant in Merchants Square. The food was really good and was very kid-friendly. We went last August and it was so incredibly hot and humid it was almost unbearable. Some of the historic buildings have A/C so that offered some relief. My DS who was 7 at the time loved hanging out in the blacksmith shop but it was way too hot for me!!

How about the new Great Wolf Lodge?

It has an indoor water park - we just had to cancel our reservations becasue of summer plan conflicts. My son can't wait to be able to actually go!

We stayed at the Springhill Suites last summer when we went to Busch Gardens/Water Country. It was fine--nothing fancy, but a decent breakfast and convenient location. The pool was a small indoor pool. The room had two beds, plus a sleeper bed, so good with 3 kids. It also had a small fridge and micro, I believe. A good size room.

If you wanted a fun place to hang out on one end of the trip I would stay a night at the Great Wolf, but to stay there the whole time would get expensive.

It depends on what activities you are going to focus on. Are you going to spend your entire visit at Colonial Williamsburg including Jamestown & Yorktown? If so, I'd opt for one of Colonial Williamsburg's onsite hotels. They have budget up to high end accommodations available. You'll get priority reservations for the taverns and be right in the action if you. Lunch is first come first serve at the taverns. It's cheaper to go then as well. The food is delicious. ::yes::

Go to Plan Your Visit and you'll see the hotels and packages available.

There are also other hotels a few miles away. I guess it would be about a 10 minute ride from the main stretch to colonial's visitor center. Hilton Garden Inn is the newest on that stretch that I can remember. The old Holiday Inn which is now a Ramada is the closest the visitor center. I don't know what condition it is in though.

Does anyone have any idea how close the Great Wolf Lodge is to Colonial? We've been meaning to go hang there one weekend but just haven't gotten around to it yet. The waterpark does look fun.

Are you planning to do Busch Gardens or Water Country too? Maybe we can direct you to an in the middle of the road place.

The new Lodge is about 5 miles from the historic area...out near the Pottery (if you know where that is). A fairly straight shot along Route 199 or Route 60.

Of course, Route 60 has LOTS of hotels/motels/accommodations. I call it "the strip". It has everything...restaurants, souvenir places, hotels, etc.

Pretty much any "chain" is here...some have some newer hotels, and some have been here awhile. And almost all are within 5-10 miles (or less) from the historic area of Colonial Williamsburg (Jamestown and Yorktown are a bit further out, but not much).

I'm sorry I can't tell you which ones are nicer or anything...I haven't had the opportunity to stay in any of them...we live really close so there's no need for us to stay there. :)

We stayed at Great Wolf Lodge last summer on our trip to Williamsburg and my kids loved the hotel and the water park. We definately would stay there again.
