We are going to HHI for Spring Break but want to spend a few nights before in Charleston and Savannah. Can anyone recommend hotels under $250 with free breakfast? Also, I would love some ideas of things to do. We will be bringing our boys 9 and 13. Thanks for your help!!

I've stayed 3 times now at the Courtyard by Marriott, right across the street from the Welcome Center in Savannah. Very clean and spacious rooms. No free breakfast though, but they do have a breakfast and I think kids eat free though, and each adult is $8. Rooms are well under $250.

We stay at the Hilton Savannah DeSoto hotel in the historic district and love it! No free breakfast, but we walk down to the waterfront for breakfast.

We stayed at The Hampton Inn in downtown Savannah. It was right across from the water, free breakfast and the rooms were nice. I don't know the rate b/c my mom was with me and she got an employee rate of $29 (she worked for Hilton).

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express a few weeks ago. It was $160/night w/ two Queen beds, a harbor view, and free hot breakfast...eggs, bacon, sausage, omelets, muffins, fruit, etc. My father loved watching the ships from the room, staff was friendly, and it was w/in walking distance of many attractions.
To do...take the trolley tour, fun and a good way to see the city. Eat at the Pink House, right behind the Holiday Inn Express...or Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House, Paula Deens, or Uncle Bubbas...last two touristy but fun. Wonderful walks.

I have 2 ideas that may interest you.
There is a ghost tour that picks you up downtown http://www.hearseghosttours.com/ where you actually ride in a hearse! They have these stool type chairs that you sit in in the back of the hearse, I went with them and it was an awesome time.
Also, the Tunderbird Inn
http://thethunderbirdinn.com/ is an old hotel that has been updated and has neat quirky things to give it a southern feel like Krispy Kreme doughnuts for breakfast and moonpies for turn down. The rooms have fridges in them which can help you save some $. I also believe kids stay free.I haven't stayed there personally but have heard it was a good time here.

I have stayed at both the Holiday Inn Express Historic District and the Hyatt for about $140 per night. I used my AAA discount at the Hyatt for the lower rate and found at check-in that it included free breakfast (up to $15 per person or the breakfast buffet in the main restaurant).

I would not recommend the Thunderbird Inn at all.

My daughter goes to school in Savannah and she said the police are there all the time. Her freshman dorm wasn't that far from the Inn, and it was suggested to them during orientation that they avoid that area for walking after dark. Too close to the outer-fringe of the city.

We love the Harbourview Inn in Charleston. Great location and includes a breakfast, cookies and milk at night, and of course wine and cheese hour in the afternoon! My son loves the big jars of candy that are available in the lobby during the day.

I stayed at the Ashley Inn bed and breakfast and it was wonderful, on my way back from Florida, I stayed at the Magnolia Inn, in Summerville, which was also wonderful. This was 12 years ago, before I moved to Europe, I remember the cost being reasonable! I also had an excellent meal at the Hominy Grill, that meal still stands out in my mind! have fun, I don't remember the name of the b&b that I stayed at in Savannah, but it was something historical and wonderful!
