My family and i are travelling to Disneyland from Australia and we leave in 3 days!!!

It is our first overseas trip and my 2.5 year old daughters first trip.

My daughter is an absolute Mickey Mouse Clubhouse fan and thats probably the main reason we are going when she is so young. We probably will try and get back again but probably won't be for at least 5 years.

I plan on buying her lots of Mickey stuff as getting anything Mickey here is very rare.

So my question is if we buy toys, souveniers etc can we leave all the excess packaging in the hotel room and leave a more generous tip for them to dispose of it or is this frowned upon? We just want to be able to fit as much as we can in our luggage since we can't pop back for more stuff to easily

I was thinking of taking a few garbage bags so its all tidy but wasn't sure. I would get rid of it myself but i'm not sure where...

Any help would be appreciated, i did a few searches but nothing came up. Probably a dumb question but i just thought i'd ask..

nah its not a dumb question at all...actually I do it all the time and have never thought twice about it...If I was buying alot then maybe putting the excess bags in a trash bag might be nice but as long as you dont leave it thrown on the floor or something then I wouldnt even worry about it...thats what they do...Im sure there are alot worse things theyve seen and had to deal with...your fine:goodvibes

We purchased heaps of stuff that we needed to leave the packaging behind for. What we did was compact it down as much as possible, separated cardboards, etc, like we need to do with our normal council service.

What you could do as well is if you're purchasing as you go break it up over a number of days.

Our last day was the worst though, and there was a lot of rubbish. We were very generous with our tip.

i'm sure the hotel has a large dumpster or something for trash, and if you mention it to management, they'll probably appreciate the gesture and offer to help, or do it for you. bringing some trash bags is a really good idea!

DH and i have 4 kids and we always work very hard not to leave a hotel room messy. all our trash is in wastebaskets, used towels are left in the tub, etc. many years ago we traveled with a family who absolutely trashed all their hotel rooms, and i vowed never to do the same, LOL!!!

Thanks!

I guess its getting down to the wire now and i am actually thinking about being there rather than just thinking one day...:cool1:

You, my friend, are an angel! What you're asking shows a wonderful level of consideration for housekeeping. Kudos to you!

How much rubbish do you think you'll generate? It may accumulate daily. What DH and I do is use our shopping bags as extra trash bags and get them ready for housekeeping each morning. If you think you'll have a whopper of a trash day then it wouldn't hurt to bring a kitchen bag with you just in case. :)

Sure, leave a few extra dollars. Extra bags may mean an extra trip to the dumpster so more is a nice gesture.

Have fun!!!

Do not forget to take some green bags for shopping as well as this will help you cut down on plastic bags, we got a few plastic bags as souvenirs because every purchase you make will go into a plastic bag and you will end up with so many and you will be amazed at how much empty wrappers you have. We did the same we took some garbage bags with us and recycled as much as possible, I suppose us Australians have been taught to recycle. Funny story for you we went to the Character Warehouse and bought alot of things for family when we went to the checkout the lady serving us gave us a strange look when we said no plastic bags please we have our own carry bags she said oh you must be from Australia I had a couple like you here last week and they had there own bags. Be prepared for strange looks when you refuse a plastic bags and good on you for being considerate it would be nice if others would think the same but most of all enjoy your trip.

There will usually be a large garbage can of some kind near the entrance to your hotel building. We stay at HoJo and if we have pizza boxes or any extra packaging that won't fit well in the hotel room garbage - we take it to the larger can right by the entrance and put it there. Helps us feel better and makes a little less work for the housekeepers. :thumbsup2

Thanks all for the positive feedback.

I think i will take some garbage bags but get rid of rubbish as we go and if i can throw it out myself in a dumpster/bin at the hotel i will.

I'm even taking some clothes that i am ok with dumping if the other stuff needs the room :rotfl:

I'm a bit excited can you tell?...

My older 2 DD's have backpacks that we will be leaving behind in the trash if necessary too :lmao: They are planning on getting new ones at Little Miss Matched, or somewhere similar. I don't think there will be any upset kids if the old ones only make it as far as the trash.

Last time we went, we just used some of our excess shopping bags for trash. We tied them up and left them with the rubbish bin so it was obvious they were to go.

Have fun - we have 11 days to go and are all getting excited here too.

I always say the same thing, I'll dump my clothes if need be for room in my suitcase. I've never had to do it yet, fingers crossed I never have to. I do dump all my toiletries, hair brush, etc. Mainly I just get Disney to dhip stuff home for me.

I also leave in 3 days. Where are you flying out from?

Excites is good!:woohoo:

Many hotels keep their dumpsters in places that are inaccessible to guests, so you ay not be able to dump the bags for them. Have you thought about requesting the store to remove the packaging and dispose of it for you? Most will do so as a service with a smile. They thoroughly understand that you have a long, did I say LOOOONG?, way to travel with very limited space.

Have fun in DL! The first time for a wee one is always precious.

Thanks, i might actually ask to remove the packaging if it is something large as that would make it easier.

We fly out of Sydney on Sunday on the new airbus so very exciting.

I am going to throw out our toiletries and stuff when we leave as i bought most of it specifically for the trip so that is not a problem for me :)

Hey i would leave my mum behind if it would create more space :lmao:

Ah but you see your Mum provides and extra bag. This is the way I see my dad. We cull his "stuff" to a minimum so we get his baggage allowance :lmao:

Queenie82 - I like your thinking!

I am heading out tonight to get all the little bits and pieces i have forgotten and then we are ready to go, just going to charge the camera batteries and dvd player and we are ready to go. This is just too scary!

How exciting for your little family! I hope you have a fun, safe trip with plenty of room for souvenirs. I'd say it's a great thing that you found this board before your trip.

Oooohh, I can feel your excitement Ihaveamickeymousekid! :goodvibes Have a great trip!

By the way, I've noticed a lot of Australians are going soon. Do you have a major school break this time of year?

There were some REALLY cheap airfares to travel at this time of year :goodvibes

It was just too difficult to pass them up (that's what I told DH anyway :lmao:)

We have 4 school terms a year, with holidays pretty evenly divided. So in NSW we're finishing our two-week break, then we'll have another 6 weeks December/January when it's summer and almost the whole country shuts down, two more weeks at Easter, and another two June/July.

The holidays line up pretty much between each state, I think Victoria starts a week earlier, and some independant/private schools have an extra week mid year and at Christmas. Tasmania may have a three term year, but someone may correct me on that one.

Australian's and Kiwis are great travellers - we don't think anything of a 13 hour flight Sydney - LA, and then on from there. And if not the 13 hours to the USA, most everyone else will travel 20 hours to the UK without thinking about it. In the workplace we have 4 weeks Annual Leave granted each year.

And I'm generalising again, but most schools don't worry if you take your kids out of school for an overseas holiday.

Plus flights are pretty cheap at present, and with the dollar edging towards parity. If DH and I could get away for a couple of weeks we would be heading off tomorrow!

This is the final week of School holidays in NSW (my travel agent is counting down the days ;) )
So some have indeed have especially been going over the past 2 weeks. QLD and VIC generally are close by but I believe QLD started earlier...
Private Schools usually get an extra week in at least 2 of the holiday breaks. Some add to the october holidays as well.

Taking kids out of school generally speaking isn't a major deal though...certainly in Primary school...

As said above the Airfares are just too tantalising to ignore.

DO expect an influx in early december as well. Getting our flights was a quick and the dead situation. :lmao:
Schools do very little in the last weeks of school for the year (our years run Jan-Dec) so this is another favourite time of year to get the kids out of school.
