hotel near Universal Studios

I'm looking for a family friendly hotel near US. We fly into LAX, don't mind driving a bit if we have to. We will end up in Anaheim to go to DL, pretty much already have that hotel picked out. We've stayed in Santa Monica area before and really liked it, but it's also a bit pricey for this trip. Suggestions? We'll have a rental car.
