Hotel Booking Question

Hello all!
I am booking a room at the GCH today for a trip before our MR cruise in February. As far as I know, there aren't any discounts on hotel or ticket packages. Am I correct in understanding that I can book my hotel now so make sure I have a room and once they release whatever promotions for the New Year, we can cancel our room booking (with no penalty) and book the new promotion? We're really hoping for the 5 for 3 deal

Even better. If you book room only, you can call and have them CHANGE your existing reservation. You don't have to cancel and rebook. As long as it's room only and not a package.

I've been watching the Costco travel deals so if something came up there, I would have to completely cancel my reservation through the hotel and then rebook with Costco, correct?
What about if Disney releases a 5 for 3 hotel and ticket package? Would I have to completely cancel my reservation in that case?

Yes, if you want to book through Costco you would. But, if you can get the same deal directly through booking with Disney they will just change your reservation to the package.
