Hostess snack cakes

Growing up I always got a peanut butter & jelly sandwich with a Hostress treat. Usually a cupcake. There was a Hostess outlet in the town I grew up in. When they had their "big sales," my Mom would really stock up and fill the extra freezer with Hostess. I'd even eat them frozen sometimes.

I never had these as a child, I grew up in a house that if you wanted a cupcake you baked it from scratch. I tried one as an adult and they were crazy sweet and tasted cheap. I guess I don’t have the childhood nostalgia for it.

I never really liked Twinkies. I do remember when the Chocodile came out. There seems to be a small industry devoted to finding them since their production is currently limited. But as far as the cakes go, it was always Ding Dongs or Ho-Hos for me. They're pretty similar other than the shapes.

But my favorite from Hostess was always the cherry pies. I guess they're more empanadas.

Other than that Zingers. I remember the pre-Hostess Zingers when they were from the Dolly Madison brand.

Looks like they're still available under the brand, although I'm not sure what the division is where Hostess sells them. Actually - looks like Hostess owns them and sells Zingers under that brand in some regions.

Always hated Twinkies....love the Hostess cupcakes and devil dogs but my favorite snack cake was the Funny Bones (chocolate and peanut butter). I made peanut butter balls over the holiday and coated them in chocolate with a peanut butter drizzle and they just happened to taste exactly like Funny Bones. I was so happy.

I'll buy FB once in a while when I have a craving for them.
Ooh, I loved Funny Bones, forgot about them. puckerup:

I also remember Butterscotch Krimpets, made by Tastykake, which were my Dad’s favorite.

I don't eat any of that stuff now, I think it all tastes so artificial. But as a kid, we had a Hostess outlet my mom would hit up once a month for lunch box treats (she'd throw them in the freezer). My faves were the Apple Pies and the cupcakes, but she'd always cut the 2 pack cupcakes in half so we'd only get one. I was jealous of the kids that got the whole 2 pack in their lunches!

Hostess snowballs!!! And I don't care which color coconut they put on them, lol When I lived in MA, I lived near the Hostess outlet, so I could satisfy my craving. Here in Western MD, it's hard to find them. When I do, I get extra and put them in the freezer. You have me craving one right now~~
Duh! I couldn't remember what the round coconut Hostess cakes were...thanks for saving me LOL! Snowballs, yes!

:worship:

Suzy Q's were my favorites until the change in ownership. It took forever for them to come back and then when they did, the cakes weren't individually baked but like a slab that was cut. They didn't taste the same to me. According to Wikipedia, it looks like they went back to the old way in 2018, but I guess I wasn't buying them anymore. And it looks like they were eliminated for good in late 2020.

I also like the Cupcakes, and we get those on sale from time to time. Costco has a box of Twinkies and Cupcakes right now, that I'm trying to avoid buying, lol. I will eat Twinkies but not as a regular thing. DH is a fan of the apple pies.

Always hated devil dogs -- they were so dry!

My lunchtime would be made if Mom put a Ho-Ho (chocolate swiss roll) or a Ding-Dong (chocolate covered filled cake) in my lunchbox. Can't remember when I've had them since. They used to be in foil.

I've got a great recipe for a giant Ding-Dong cake -- time consuming, but fun and tasty.
Agree! The cake part of the Devil Dogs would stick to the roof of your mouth! Twinkies and Cherry Fruit pies are a tie for me. It's been years and I can still get them where I live.

As a kid I enjoyed Hostess Cupcakes the best. Last time, I tried anything Hostess, several years ago, whatever I had gotten definitely didn't taste the same at all. Elgerbear, I hope you enjoy chocolate mint Twinkies! That sounds tasty :)

Devil Dog fans. Did you lick the creme sticking out between the layers before biting into the cake?

When I was a kid I loved Twinkies but I haven't had one in years. Was it Hostess that had banana flavored twinkies? For some reason I remember that!

More than the taste, we enjoyed eating the snack cakes in bizarre ways.

Yodels/Ho-Hos: peel the chocolate coating off and eat that first. Unroll.
Devil Dogs: eat the cream first, then choke down the dry cake.
Twinkies: Use your finger to eat the cream filling first.
Butterscotch Krimpets: pull the icing off in a single sheet and eat first.

:) I'm glad, Elgerbear. I'm recalling now how much I loved Mystic Mint Cookies as a kid in the green box. Yum!

I meant to say earlier that until a handful or so years ago, I had no idea that Hostess product taste along with availability can differ depending where you are living.

Devil Dogs....but with a great big glass of milk because they were so dry.

My father owed an Esso gas station when I was a kid. Right across the street was a Hostess outlet. We basically ate whatever he brought home for us.

HoHos are my favorite Hostess! And Schnucks’ version of snowballs are the absolute best, but unfortunately, I haven’t seen them in the stores in years.

They're my favorite too! (PM if you ever want me to mail you some from Mass,)

Swiss rolls next for me, then the chocolate cupcakes

My favorite was always King Dons. But, I don't think they make them any more. I think now they are called Ding Dongs or Ring Dings? Something like that.
