It appears that our ten year old daughter will receive her heart's desire, a horse. I was totally in love with them as a young child so I understand her love. She and I are currently taking riding lessons with a wonderful riding instructor/horse trainer. He will choose her horse and will board it for us. The first 1.5 to 2 years of board will be covered for us. Any ideas about things a 12 year old girl can do to earn money for board? We live in a rural area but cannot have a horse at our current home. This is very exciting and scary at the same time!

Anybody have horses? Any suggestions? Advice?

first of all congrats to your daughter for getting a horse. what type things can she do or what does she like do? My old hair stylist has horses and boards them for other people. She has/had a lady that would help with the up keep of the stalls, like cleaning them out or feeding the horses for payment of the board of her horse.

Thanks!

I'm nervous for us, I guess. She could clean stalls but can't do high endurance things. Someone we know suggested mowing lawns, etc., but she can't do things like that. She won't be able even in 2 years. She has hypotonia and fatigue among other things. She's been taking riding lessons and loves them. She's totally in love with horses!

My son (4 years old) does horse therapy and he loves it. I'd be willing to bet the more she rides the better her stamina will get in time. When jonah started his therapy he would ride for 5-10 mins and then completely fall asleep. He's been riding for a little over a year now and he is up to 30 mins so it has helped him a lot in that manner. I don't know what the connection is with him and the horse he rides on a regular bases but when they try him on another horse (because of a different gate) he doesn't do as good and they have to put traveler (the horse) in his stall because he doesn't like not being used with jonah. I hope she will continue to love horses they are such wonderful animals.

I'm a horse gal, too. :)

Is your daughter into/good at arts and crafts? Maybe she can sell some horse- or animal-related items (drawings, paintings, paint-on-glass, etch-on-glass, T-shirts, etc.). She can sell to ppl at the barn, tack shop, pet shops, local crafters' shop, eBay, a craft Web site, Cafe Press products, etc.

Does she like to cook? Maybe she can sell some horse treats and dog treats (the latter being more profitable since more ppl have dogs than horses) that she makes. (Do check the laws in your area first, though....) She can sell them at the barn, horse shows, tack shop, pet stores, dog parks, dog events, dog kennels/daycares, door-to-door (WITH you these days!!), etc.

As somebody already mentioned, many ppl lessen their boarding costs by doing work around the barn, big or small jobs. Many ppl also lessen the costs by taking care of their own horse (doing all the feeding and mucking).

Do realize that owning a horse is like having a mortgage. And there is truth in the saying, "I made a small fortune in horses. I started with a large fortune." ;)
