Horrific Accident at 6 Flags Kentucky.

From what has been said the cable didn't snap and cut her feet off on the snap it broke free and wrapped across her feet and then when the ride went down or when the sensor said there was a loose cable it tightened and that's what pulled her feet off the tightening of the cables not the snap from breaking. And they didn't free fall.

:scared1: :sad1: This is the first I heard of this. How incredibly sad and scary. Prayers for that little girl. :guilty:

So the kid who said they hit the ground was probably just in a bit of shock and mis-spoke? Understandable- thanks for sorting me out. I hope that little girl is ok.

They may have hit harder than they were supposed to but from what I can tell they certainly didn't free fall from the top, or else there would be a lot more injuries/deaths. I guess silence in this case is better than what could be, because if she had died I'm sure that would be being broad casted.

Rides Shut After Ky. Six Flags Accident

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Six Flags and another company shut down eight more thrill rides Friday around the country after a teenage girl had her feet chopped off at the ankle on a Superman Tower of Power.

State inspectors, meanwhile, returned to Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom where the accident happened to examine the ride, which lifts passengers 177 feet straight up, then drops them nearly the same distance at speeds reaching 54 mph.

It was unclear at what point during the ride the 13-year-old was injured Thursday, said Wendy Goldberg, a Six Flags spokeswoman. The girl was taken to a hospital. She was not identified and details of her condition were not immediately available Friday.

Six Flags has shut down similar rides at parks in St. Louis, Gurnee, Ill., and near Washington as a safety precaution, Goldberg said. Six Flags Over Texas, near Dallas, also has a Superman Tower of Power, but it is not the same ride, Goldberg said.

There were no reports of injuries on the ride before Thursday, she said.

"Millions of people have safely ridden this ride in our parks," Goldberg said.

The accident led Cedar Fair Entertainment Co. to shut down and inspect drop tower rides at five of its amusement parks as a precaution, company spokeswoman Stacy Frole said.

Intamin, a Swiss company, made all the rides that were closed by both companies, said Craig Ross, a spokesman for Cedar Fair.

"We're going to keep these things down until we're certain it's safe," Ross said. "We'll wait and see."

An e-mail message sent to Intamin was not immediately returned Friday.

The five Cedar Fair rides that will be shut down are at Kings Island near Cincinnati; Canada's Wonderland, in Toronto; Kings Dominion in Doswell, Va.; Carowinds, in Charlotte, N.C.; and Great America in Santa Clara, Calif.

Edited, because Sally posted the same information that I did . . .

Sorry, were we doing it at the same time? I have comcast and noticed a story on The Fan, it's the video page, but my speaker is broken. I went to CBS News (the story The Fan came from) and there is an article and video there. No news on the young lady yet. That's what I'm waiting to hear about. I'm praying she is doing fine. They are showing pictures of where the cable snapped.

"When I got up there, the lady, she was just sitting there and she didn't have no legs. She didn't have no legs at all. She was just calm, probably in shock from everything."

(CBS/AP) Six Flags and another company shut down eight more thrill rides Friday around the country, including a ride at a North Carolina amusement park, after a teenage girl had her feet chopped off at the ankle on a Superman Tower of Power.

State inspectors, meanwhile, returned to Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom, where the accident happened, to examine the ride, which lifts passengers 177 feet straight up, then drops them nearly the same distance at speeds reaching 54 mph.

It was unclear at what point during the ride the 13-year-old was injured Thursday, said Wendy Goldberg, a Six Flags spokeswoman. The girl was taken to a hospital. She was not identified and details of her condition were not immediately available Friday.

Chris Williams, who witnessed the event, told CBS affiliate WLKY that riders saw the cable break as it got to the top on the right-hand side.

Treva Smith said it snapped again as the ride descended.

"The people on the ride just came and hit the ground," Smith said.

Next, Williams said he saw the teen maimed.

"As the ride came down, the wire swung left, struck the young lady on the back side of my children," Williams said.

Williams' daughter had traded seats with the 13-year-old, and was sitting on the other side of the ride.

Smith told WLKY she raced to the ride to find members of her group who had been on it.

"When I got up there, the lady, she was just sitting there and she didn’t have no legs," Smith said. "She didn’t have no legs at all. She was just calm, probably in shock from everything."

There were no reports of injuries on the ride before Thursday, she said.

"Millions of people have safely ridden this ride in our parks," Goldberg said.

The accident led Cedar Fair Entertainment Co. to shut down and inspect drop tower rides at Carowinds in Charlotte, N.C., and other four of its other amusement parks as a precaution, company spokeswoman Stacy Frole said.

The ride lifts passengers 177 feet straight up, then drops 154 feet, reaching a speed of 54 miles per hour according to the park's Web site. It opened in 1995 and was known then as "the Hellevator," reports the Louisville Courier-Journal.

The four other Cedar Fair rides that will be shut down are at Kings Island near Cincinnati; Canada's Wonderland, in Toronto; Kings Dominion in Doswell, Va.; and Great America in Santa Clara, Calif.

I imagine that even if the ride system broke completely and caused the car to plummet to the ground, that there would be some sort of emergency brake to stop the car, like when an elevator cable snaps.

nothing really new to report at 4:00pm on Fox41. In fact, they mentioned very little about the injured girl or her condition.

nothing new at 5:00pm, either ... more reports of the girl being moved to Vanderbilt.

Can you believe this isn't being made a big deal of! Please keep us updated Kentucky people. Too bad Tigger didn't grab her we might be hearing something.

Isn't that the truth? I've been watching TV off and on all day and have heard nothing on the news about this.

it wasn't the lead story on the news broadcast I watched at 5:00pm. There was a train derailment in J'town that has been "breaking news" all day.

If this accident happened at Walt Disney World, message board readers far and wide would know who was involved, what caused the accident, and have transcripts to the 911 call. Not sure if that's a good thing or not... but, it's what would be happening.

There may be no news to report. The parents may be keeping quite and the park has to not talk because of the liability issue. This is so sad and horrifying. It's a parent's worst nightmare. I am glad my kids are ride wussies for the most part.

The family probably wants their privacy right now.

chobie, I think you're exactly right. I work at a newspaper and there are often stories where sources just won't talk to us or we can't get any new information, so rather than make something up or exaggerate things or rewrite the same information over and over, we just wait.

But it seems we can't win either way. If we wait because we don't have new information, we're burying or ignoring the story. If we rewrite, add speculative quotes from witnesses, etc, then we're sensationalizing and everyone is yelling at us to leave the poor family alone.

That is absolutely awful..

I remember when my son was little and he was involved in an explosion that gave him 3rd degree burns all over his face, arms, up his nostrils, etc., (he was looking down in a dryed up well, there was a can of Coleman fuel in there and the little boy that was with him lit a match and threw it in the well without my son realizing it) and a neighbor (fire chief) grabbed him and raced into his house to call 911.. He called me - I was less than a minute away - and when I saw my son his face was pure white and all of his hair was burnt off, but he wasn't crying at all.. He just kept asking, "What does my face look like?" Halfway to the hospital he let out the most blood curdling scream -and his burns became fire-engine red.. The shock had worn off and he was in complete agony..

By reading the news accounts of this accident today, this is probably what happened to this poor girl.. She was in total shock and therefore not responding in a manner you would expect..

Absolutely horrible and heartbreaking.. :(

I absolutely agree. With HIPAA, it's impossible (or it's supposed to be, anyway) to find out any sort of medical information. This is a family going through unspeakable pain, I imagine talking to the media is the least of their worries.

I have to admit, I'm intrigued by the reports that the girl is now at Vanderbilt University Hospital. Louisville's hospitals are very good - Jewish Hospital has done 3 hand transplant surgeries. I'm sure there's a simple explanation, if that is what has happened... maybe that's where the family is from. I don't know.
