Horrific Accident at 6 Flags Kentucky.

Anybody local have any more updates?

They haven't been giving anything new. In surgery at 8pm. Originally reported she was taken to University, which is the major trauma hospital. it is 1:45am here so we might not get anything new until morning.

I expected more eyewitness reports. Seems like someone would have seen something that was on the ride. of course they may be too upset to talk about it.

This is all so strainge. IF her fett were cut off by the snapping cable....

Mythbusters had a show once trying to use a snapping cabble to cut some one in half. Despite their efforts, it could not be done. At the end of the episode they had "busted" the myth that a snapping cable could severe a human.

However, a would imagine a 13 year old's ankles are probably a bit more delicate than the trunk of an adult. This is just so freakish! Imagine going to an amusement park fr a day of fun and winding up maimed!

**Warning graphic post**

From what I read, an eyewitness said that the cable wrapped around her legs and pulled. Not sure what part of her legs, apparently low. I would imagine this would have happened extremely quickly and with a lot of force. (assuming this eyewitness was correct)

I can only pray she didn't even know what happened to her and passed out quickly. The entire thing is just too gruesome, I really hope she makes it and that they can successfully reattach her feet. I can't imagine what she and her family are going through. I really hope she doesn't remember anything. :(

I just read about thins on CNN, OMG how horrible, her feet amputated at the ankle.

That is horrible ~ Prayers to the girl and her family.

I was dozing in bed listening to the news last night when I heard this story. I sat straight up because I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

Words can't even express how horriffic this is. All I can think about is that little girl and her parents.:sad1:

I heard about this last night and it totally freaked me out! I have been to KK and have riden that very ride:eek: I know it's a freak accident and the odds are very slim but it's still so scary. After I heard about this all I wanted to do was hug my kids:sad1:
I am praying for her, her family and the doctors. :sad2:

I hope her feet can be reattached! Dh's family's late neighbor (he died last year at age 95) had one of his feet cut off during a train accident (he was a railroad engineer) and it was reattached. This was back YEARS ago. Amazingly, the foot worked fine and he didn't even have a limp! I couldn't believe it, but apparently they CAN reattach them in many cases and they will function okay.:confused3

OMG! This story has me in tears. Many prayers for this young girl and her family!!!:sad1:

how awful -prayers go out to the girl and family!!!

Last August a similar ride (Drop Zone)at our State Fair - only smaller and portable, I imagine - had the same kind of malfunction with the cables - luckily no one was seriously injured! I wonder if this is an on going problem for these drop rides????

This is just awlful!! My thoughts and prayers go out to this girl and her family. I pray the can reattach her feet. I and my dd have rode this ride a few years ago at KK. Now Kings Island here had close their ride ,the drop zone because it was made from the same company ,they are inspecting it. My kids will not ride it anymore!

the news is on now... no one is saying whether or not she's even in Louisville right now. The family is keeping VERY tight lipped about the whole thing.

No interviews from the family or Six Flags in the immediate time.

I watched WLKY at 12:30, and they had one very brief eyewitness account, and other than that... not much to tell. There are 2 sets of investigators on the scene: from the Dept. Of Agriculture and from Six Flags. The ride is still closed.

No one from the 3 Louisville TV stations know which hospital the girl is in. There are reports that she could be at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville.

I expected this story to be the main focus of the newscast today - but, it was quite short.

WXIA-TV
Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom has released the following statement:
At approximately 4:45 p.m. on Thursday, 6-21-07, the Superman Tower of Power ride at the Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom Park in Louisville, Ky. malfunctioned and injured a 13-year-old female, whose legs were severed above the ankle. The EMTs at the park were on the scene immediately and the girl was transported to UL hospital, where she is currently being treated. We have been in contact with both the hospital and her family. The ride has been shut down and will remain so until a full investigation has been completed. We will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide whatever assistance we can."

Yes everyone is being very quiet about it. It has hardly been on the news at all. Can you imagine if it happened at Disney! It would be on every 2 minutes. When they had the minor injuries at KR that was on constantly and now a girl is critically injured and miraculously not dead and it happened in a horrible way and I've only heard it mentioned twice and we have the news channels on almost all the time. And people try to say they don't have it in for Disney. She had a guardian angel that's for sure to not bleed to death.

My DH said he heard it could have been worse that the cable went over all the peoples legs in that car but she was the only one who couldn't free her legs.

If the ride cables broke and everyone free-fell 177 ft down to the pavement, why wasn't anyone else hurt? I'm glad they weren't, but the story does not make sense to me. Anyone have any idea?

I don't think it was a cable that "holds the ride up" or anything. I believe that ride operates strictly using hydraulic power within the center pieces. But there was some type of cable that came loose and fell across them.

“We seen the cable break loose soon as it got to the top on the right-hand side,” said Chris Williams, who witnessed the event.

Treva Smith said it snapped again as the ride descended.

“The people on the ride just came and hit the ground,” Smith said.

Williams said she saw the teen maimed.

This is from the original story though.:confused3

Well that is just a TV show.

When my BIL was in the navy they showed him (and all the newbies) videos of tow cables snapping. They sliced through many layers of steel. They were shown the videos to warn them not to be anywhere in that area when the cables are in use. I have seen holes in concrete block walls from little pieces of wood sent flying from woodworking machines.

Nature and physics are immense forces that can not always be duplicated by man.

It sounds like there shold have been some sort of guard to catch the broken cables. Cables break, they all will break given time. It should be expected and designed for. But then money comes into the issue.
