Just need to vent. So we arrived and did DTD first. We were here last May 2011 and i think one highlight of the trip was the DTD magic store for my magic trick obessed son. Well today he was already mad that at DTD there were no rides ( he forgot its no theme park) and hot air ballon was gone( boy was I happy $$$). So I said we will go to the magic store and you can pick something out. We walked back and forth like 3 times looking for it, finally i noticed it's now a cigar shop. Poor guy was then done and balled like a baby.

Guess its time to buy his Harry Potter book and get to universal next.

Where on earth is there a Cigar Shop in DTD?

O.K.,
Not a great start (and I understand, if Lego store was gone, oh my!) but chin up and stiff upper lip because what you absolutely must do is find a positive spin!
you cannot BEGIN your vacation with a 'grr'
Blows Pixie Dust you way!!!!!!!!pixiedust:pixiedust:

Really? Heaven forbid there be something in Disney not geared towards children! I guess we must be encouraging kids to drink too since they sell alcohol from stands at the World Showcase and at every TS restaurant besides MK...

OP, sorry your son was disappointed. Things change, life goes on. I think he'll find other things in WDW to entertain him. If not, you've got bigger problems!

Downtown disney isnt really geared for kids so i understand a cigar shop being there but even so I wish disney was smoke free as I am used to no smoking in public places (thats how it is in canada). There will be many other things for him to see, guess its better to research before you get him excited about something, disney changes quickly

I thought DTD had the cigar store for years. I think they just moved it to a new location.

Ditto.

I understand his being disappointed, but life is going to hand him much worse than that.

I thought the magic shop was where D street is today? Is the Cigar shop we are taking about Fuegos- I thought that was located closer to Paradiso 37? Maybe I have my geography all messed up.

OP, you should have taken him to Goofy's candy company. There is little in a 7-year-olds life that can't be cured by yummy treats!

Op so sorry for the rough start. Hopefully its all smooth sailing from here on out!

The cigar shop has been around for years, hasn't it? We visited it on our wedding trip in 2004. I'm sorry that you didn't know the magic shop had closed and that your son was upset. This is why I research everything before we travel. Also there is a little ride in DTD - mini carousel or train or something of the like.

I can see the frustration a 7 year old would have for that to be the start of the vacation. It will be funny someday though :)
If you are going over to Universal, you should look into the magic shop there. We enjoyed a demonstration (Magic show) which my kids at 11 and 14 were very impressed with; levitation and wallet catching fire among the tricks. There is a shop in US and one in IOA. Not to mention being able to immerse in Magic in the Wizarding World. :wizard:

Agreed. I think there will be plenty of things to take his mind off of not hitting the magic store.

If it was my son, I would've put my arm around him and said "Looks like the store closed up. How about an ice cream from Ghiaradelli's?" Problem solved!

Seven year olds are pretty resilient...

Op- I understand your frustration. I don't thnk the op was saying that her son did not recover or that she could not comfort him but geez he's seven. Cut him some slack. A lot of adults on here constantly flip out over this ride or that restaurant being down for refurbishment. Yes it's a life lesson for the boy but who wants to be disappointedly vacation? I'm sure he's fine now.

Op - Hang in there. I'm sure he will find lots of fun going forward in the trip.

OP - sorry your son started off his magical vacation that way. I am sure that the magic will improve as you go on.

We always start at DTD too, but we make sure our DS knows that there are no rides and that we will be grabbing things (Goofy's Candy, eating at T-Rex, a little shopping) before we begin the magic.

Perhaps it would have been good to do Disney Quest? He might have enjoyed that. That is our plan for our upcoming trip.

DTD - Shopping, 11am T-Rex, Disney Quest, then of to MVMCP - Can't get much more magical than that.
