OK not a fun topic but necessary.I am 42 and hot flashing like a lighthouse! How does anyone else out there train while dealing with this?

My sleep is disrupted and I am almost sure this is affecting my time(I do have some shin splints too).

I don't want hormones. Is there anything anyone else does that may help?
I had this last year and the running I thought helped but here I am again.

I heard of black cohosh helping.

This is the pits,

Linda

There are lots of natual hormone replacements on the market. Ask your pharmacist for a suggestion. Also talk to your doctor, there are products that are safer that you can use for a short period of time to regain your quality of life. Not sleeping may get worse!

There is a natural management out there but I cannot remember the name of it. It has black cohosh, chaseberry, dong quai and some other herbal mixture in there that is actually recommended. Ask your gyn or primary care doc and they may be able to give you the name of it.

I am a constant blast furnace but lately have been unable to sleep at night too due to the overheating issue. I will be 42 in October. I have a Mirena IUD which has hormones in it like birth control pills and I have found that it has helped a lot. Most women our age are not willing to have the hormones but I feel that they are not a consequence to me. I don't have the risk factors that would preclude me from taking them. I also sleep with a fan blowing on me at night which has helped some too.

On a funnier note, my DS6 up and called me a hottie one night and not because I look great!! lol

In doing a little searching I think one of the forms of the supplement is called Vitex. Chasteberry is good for PMS symptoms and both black cohosh and dong quai have been shown to improve menopausal symptoms. I do know people who has used just the black cohosh and saw no improvement.

I took my little DS comment as a complement. Unfortunately, I am one of those chronically hot people. I was joking with my MIL a few years back saying if I had not flashes I might internally combust. :lmao: It is not so funny now....okay maybe it still is...:rolleyes1

What the heck is dong quai?Sounds lethal!

What part of Maine are you from-we are headed to Ogunquit. We go every year. That water should cool me down!

Linda

I am in central Maine, Norridgewock to be exact. When are you in Ogunquit? I am doing the Beach to Beacon 10K on 8/2. We also have a huge New Balance tent sale that goes on in Skowhegan from 8/7 to 8/16 that is worth the drive up if you like NB stuff.

We don't make ressies,we watch the 10 day forecast then call.It will be the 2nd or 3rd week in Aug.

I take the kids with me and my parents. We have done this for about 13 years or so.

I do like NB but am hooked on Saucony right now. Thanks for the info though.

Off to run,

Linda

I didn't want hormones either, so my doctor put me on Effexor. This is an
antidepressant, that has been used to treat hot flashes in women undergoing
chemotherapy for breast cancer. This really worked for me. I have recently stopped taking this as my hot flashes are pretty much a thing of the past.
Good luck!!

Erica:)
