Hoping lunch thief will learn a lesson - Update Post #26

Wow, what a brouhaha!
I think there are a whole lot of snack cake theives in this thread.

I would like to think that someone who is a professional, a teacher, could think of a more mature way to have handled this. What he did doesn't make him a bad person, or even a bad teacher....but it seems juvenile to me.

Did I miss the explanation of what the school did to the thief as her ACTUAL punishment?

BTW, GO DAD!

I agreed with you up until this part. There was a very simple solution to this problem all along and that was to store the lunch in a different spot. I would have gone with that option.

I am not opposed to spiking the snack cake at all but kids in middle school face a lot of issues. If the thief is a bully, s/he will retaliate. I wouldn't put my kid in that possible predicament when there was a very easy solution.

It was a solution for my child, but not the others that were having items stolen.

Why not? At our school the kids put all their lunches in a basket that gets carried down to the lunch room. It would be easy enough to carry it to a supervised space earlier in the day.

I am still unclear how an unpleasant tasting snack would lead to the thief being caught. Sounds like the adminstrative professionals came up with a more logical solution.

Just because you do it at your school, doesn't mean every school has that option.

As for the thief getting caught, even if she didn't get caught I doubt she would be snooping through OP's food again.

Would this be any different if these were adults stealing lunch at the work place?

Would people go Oh they might have an allergy, blah blah blah? Keep your paw off people' stuff!!!!!!!!!!

Because it's a middle school, not an elementary. Kids move from class to class all day long. I can't imagine the logistical nightmare.

...You may or may not believe this, but there was no malice or vengeance involved. We just wanted it to stop...that simple.

Maybe I missed something in the thread, but seems the goal of the OP was to see the stealing stop. She never mentioned the goal being the thief getting caught. Seems like if the thief took a bite from the cake... thought twice about stealing her cake again... goal would have been achieved even without the thief being caught.

:thumbsup2 This and possibly the lesson that when you steal, you might not get what you expect.

Getting caught was just a bonus.

They're not theives, they DESERVE that girl's snack cake. After all, they have ISSUES and shouldn't be blamed. :rolleyes1

As for someone with a food allergy who is old enough to know the consequences of eating their allergic foods (my 6 year old knows this) stealing food with unknown preparation/sanitation? Darwin's Law comes to mind.

I haven't had time to read the whole thread, but figured since it's 9 pages that SOMEONE had to throw their nose in the air and scold OP for the remedy.

I think it was a brilliant solution.

But if you reread post 26, and then 34 - the camera of which the OP's husband (teacher) wasn't aware showed that the thief wasn't a member of the Horticulture class, but rather someone who entered that room while the students were in the greenhouse.

Maybe OP can clarify this...she doesn't say in either of those posts whether the thief was in the same class or not..maybe the kid was in the horticulture class and asked to be excused and came back into the classroom, or just snuck back in from the greenhouse. :confused3

Sheesh - I still can't get over that there's a horticulture class! That would have been an awesome class to take way back when.

You know it didn't work, right? ;) Their solution didn't show them who the thief is. It was only when the DH told the principal and they looked at the videotapes from the security camera that they learned who the thief was. Now hopefully the situation will come to an end.

From what I can gather, teacher does not closely supervise kids during class (whole other issue), and kids go back and forth between the greenhouse and classroom on a regular basis. Thief was in the same class.
