so if I book this and take the bus from POR to MK and the ferry to Fort Wilderness, what would be my return route after the show lets out? would I take the ferry back to MK and hop the bus to POR or is there a better/shorter option?

I think that is what you would do if you do one of the earlier shows. One year we did the later show, and there were buses that took us straight back to our resort.

We always do the reverse only we take the contemporary boat. Less waiting and walk to POR buses from there.

I thought Disney changed this such that for the late show, you are bussed back to MK, if open, to find your resort bus. (Different from past years when they would take you directly to resorts from Fort Wilderness.)
Anyone with recent experience?

I believe you have a few options:

If MK is still open, you can go back the way you came or

You can take a bus out to the outpost, then take a bus to either DS or a park, and then take the bus or boat to POR from there or

You can take a bus to Wilderness Lodge, then take a bus to DS or a park, then go back to POR by Boat or Bus
