Hookah Smoking - Why is it so popular?

What's up with hookahs? It's becoming very big here. Everyone knows cigarettes can kill you, but smoking a hookah is just as bad or worse. I don't get it.

A whole new generation of people with lung cancer...

It has been popular here for awhile now with the teens. Something to do, I guess.

I haven't heard anything about teens doing it around here, yet. There are hookah bars popping up all over West Palm Beach though.

The kids think that because the smoke goes through the water in the pipe that it is somehow safer than cigs, they also enjoy the exoticness of it. Locally we have hookah bars, it is a very social thing and huge on the local Univ. campus.

My DS smokes hookah and I tried it with him once, I really liked it. I am a former smoker so I knew if I liked it that there was no way it could be a good thing . I got online and did some research. It is not a good thing. He has cut back but I know they still do it once in awhile.

It's been popular since I was in High School. I honestly don't know why anyone thinks it's better for you than cigarettes, but my friends did.

I remember going to a Hookah bar with some friends and asking the guy behind the counter how many cigarettes equaled the normal hookah smoking session (about 40 minutes) and he told me that you consume about 50% more nicotine than you would in ONE cigarette.

I have NO idea if that's true but his response was a major turn off. I never smoked hookah. I dabbled a bit in cigarettes (stupid social, "looking cool" smoking) but you couldn't pay me to smoke anything nowadays.

A large bong with several hoses that are a couple of feet long. Flavored tobaccos are placed in a tray and a charcoal brick is placed on top of the tobacco. The slow burn begins and the smell to me is similar to pipe smoke. I like the taste and the smell.

They are doing combo's of both - kind of like we used to play around with clove cigarettes etc.

I think for the under 21 crowd they can't go have a beer in a bar but they can go to a hookah bar- it makes them feel grown up.

The current generations' version of our 1970s bong with wacky tobacky...not particularly thrilled with the idea that my new teen might be toying with the hookah:sad2 but like me in the 70s, something new to try

Personally, I LOVE smoking hookah. I was always tempted to buy a small one for my home, but I realize how unhealthy it is, so I've resisted. I don't even know where there's a hookah lounge anymore, but I'd like to go to one at least once more.

Hmmm, maybe my husband and I will have to have a night out. We dont smoke at all but I do like to try new things. Not make it a habit, just experience it.

I also don't smoke at all but do Hookah on a rare occasion with some friends.. it's pretty cool, try some different flavors.

I have no idea why it has gotten so popular.

My kids (both adults now) don't get it either.

I understand how addictive regular tobacoo is.

I don't understand how anyone under about the age of 70 would have ever started smoking given we know about the health consequences..

The things I learn on the Dis! I had no idea these things were in vogue. It's been probably 25 years since I smoked from one, and it definitely wasn't tobacco then.
