Hong Kong no Phooey TR (Apr 2012)! The Yee's have it....TR finish #1101, 07/09

Hats off to you for being so calm cool and collected, I think I would have been going crazy.

I wasn't convinced about going to Shenzhen in the first place. The visa would have given us the option to consider going. This way, the decision is easy. :goodvibes

Wow!

DH travels to Mexico, many co workers travel to China. I know DH feels lucky. I can see why!

Bobbi:goodvibes

 Thanks for stopping by again!

I think if you're travelling to China proper and doing a tour or on business..you'd have the appropriate documentation, hotels, flights etc. I just think that the Chinese Roz just didn't get the concept of 2 x day trip entries into Shenzhen.

I figure the visa will be a lot easier to get if/when we decide to do that 2 or 3 week tour round China that we've always talked about. It is on the list..and if there is going to be a Shanghai Disney; well..I guess it might happen at some stage.

As they say “When you’re on a good thing, stick with it!”….Disney Fuzzy Maths revisited.

Sometime in the last 2 weeks, Hong Kong Disneyland came up with their special offers that extend past 31 March 2012. I got really excited when I saw that the 3 night long stay special offer was back up and running.

This special provides guests staying 3 nights or more at one of the Disneyland resort hotels with up to 20% off. Those of you that might remember….the Disney Fuzzy Maths (DFM) for my current situation works out as follows:
  • My current room discount is 20% off because I got my senior parents to purchase the Gold Magic Access Pass. This saves us about $350 for the 3 nights in total.
  • There is a gap of about $50 per senior, $100 in total, for the difference between the 2-day senior ticket and the senior Magic Access Pass.
  • There were other benefits associated with the Gold Magic Access Pass such as 15% discount off dining and 15% discount off merchandise. I figured that with DH and myself paying the difference in my parent’s tickets, we’d more than make the pass pay for itself just on room savings alone (currently at a net of $250).

With the release of the Long Stay special offer, I wondered how the DFM would stack up. So, I’ve spent some time today going over the fine print and running some numbers.

Turns out that for our dates, we would qualify for a 15% discount on the first night and as best as I can work out, 15% off the second and third night. I also decided to get an on-line quote from the website.

I think Hong Kong Disneyland room rates have gone up since I got my current deal. Even taking the 15% discount into account, the room rate alone seems to be $50 per room MORE than when I locked my deal in at the start of the year.

I think I’ll stick with what I’ve already got!

NOTE:

For those interested, there are two other accommodation deals:
  • Room and 2-day ticket package. Based on the numbers I ran, the discount seems to be running at around 20% for this deal.
  • Early Bird Offer. Book your hotel accommodation at least 45 days in advance and receive 20% discount.

There are also some dining deals on the website:
  • HK$50 discount per adult for dining at the Enchanted Garden dinner buffet at the Disneyland Resort Hotel, a 10% discount.
  • HK$80 discount per adult for dining at Chef Micket dinner buffet at the Disneyland Hollywood Hotel, a 25% discount.
  • There seems to be a 3-in-1 Meal Coupon available until 31 March, which is not in my travel period. It seems to be a single day equivalent to the Quick Service Dining Plan at the World. 1 x lunch coupon, 1 x dinner coupon and 1 x snack coupon and the dining places seem to offer counter service meals. This costs HK$125, a discount of 20%.

Seems like the Magic Access Pass benefits are well worth the extra $ we are paying for it!

Sounds like the best deal. Sometimes with the early savers there are so many restrictions with them. That thing I pm'd you? It is basically a way as our own , you know what I get paid for it. I dont do it for others. So that is a bonus for every travel need.

As long as your happy with what you have is all that counts.

Not much longer......:yay:

Subbing! We're in HKD at ghe end of July. Cant wait to hear how your trip goes!

Glad your Disney Fuzzy math worked out in your favor! It shows that it can't hurt to go back and double check the numbers, it very easily could have worked out as a plus for you.

I was happy with my original deal and now that I've double checked the sums, I'm even more happy. Thanks. :goodvibes

Thanks for subbing and welcome to this PTR! Are you just doing HKD or are you seeing HK as well?

:goodvibes Yes. Never hurts to double check the numbers.

I am in. How exciting that you are going to HK Disneyland. That is right around the corner. I want to see each and every Disney Park someday. It is nice that your parents are going with you. An extra $28 per ticket x 3 is worth it to have your translators. You are so funny. Sorry there are not more threads on it and that your thread was closed down. I love the food porn. I love your definition of what Asians eat. I do not know anyone who eats what people think they do, although I have never been to Asia. My husband taught me to never ask his parents what their chocolate meat is. When they asked me to try it, I said chocolate and meat do not sound good together, so no thanks. Cannot wait to read more.

I am skipping around a little, since I am so far behind. Sorry Chinese Roz was not more friendly/helpful. At least you are lighthearted about everything, since you wrote it in such a hilarious way. Hope it all works out.

Your Disney FUzzy Math post cracked me up. I had to read it twice to get it. As long as you are getting the best deal, that is what matters most.

We're actually doing Adventures by Disney-China which includes 3 days seeing Hong Kong. We added an extra day to visit HKD.

That would be a great trip to China. Enjoy!

I posted here last night but looks like it disappeared .

Anyway, what I was saying was....I was looking forward to school going back so I could concentrate on organizing this trip BUT I'm even busier with all the school/extra curricular activities, and I haven't had a chance to think about it. I haven't done anything except book the accommodation :sad2:

At least we have a long weekend coming up here with very little commitments so I'm planning on dedicating this weekend to planning this holiday :).

We ended up going with the Hollywood Hotel for our 2 nights at HKDL. We talked about it and thought that while DH and I would prefer the Disneyland Hotel, the kids would probably like the HH better. The deal was done when our youngest saw a pic of the guitar shaped pool at the HH and declared that he must stay there! We are doing one night at The Venetian in Macau so that should satisfy our luxury craving :).

So for DL, all I've booked is the 2 nights accom (2 Park view rooms at the Hollywood Hotel) and 2 day park passes. I'm going to book Chef Mickey's for one night and the Enchanted Garden breakfast one morning. Thanks for the heads up on the online discounts, I will check them out :thumbsup2. We miss out on the Disney Dim Sum as it finishes before we get there :(.

Glad to see your planning is coming along well!

It's March 1st, I just had to read up to see how you're holding up!!

The Halloween Trunk or Treat looked fun and festive. People really got into it. You never even see that much themed candy here in the States.

I am sure you already decided, but I would say go phat. I would end the trip with Disney. That will give you more energy to explore the city at your pace.

I hope you get the planning that you want done over the Labour Day weekend. I'd be curious to see your pics of HH for comparison purposes. :thumbsup2

The Disney Dim Sum deal might not cover your travel period but they do offer the Disney Dim Sum on Sundays. Are you there at a weekend? If so, just book it and see.

I'm trying not to focus on the end of the month. I have a bunch of things to finish at work before then.

I'm actually starting the trip with Disney. The overwhelming consensus was to finish the trip with Disney and I agreed. Except that if I finish my trip at Disney, I run into the Easter weekend and I expect the crowds to be crazy that week. So, we're doing it 'ph'irst.

4 weeks countdown and to-do checklist

4 weeks to go and I’m still trying to keep a calm and steady ship going. I have buckets of excrement to do at work and still have to get that shoveling done before I slack off.

However.

I have 4 weeks to go.

:dance3: :dance3: :dance3: :dance3:

At this stage of the planning game on any other PTR, the discussion will invariably start to drift towards the practicalities of the travel:

  • Start buying toiletries and medical supplies. I’ve checked the stash at home and have compiled my list. I’m going to need disposable toothbrushes for the plane, dental floss, Panadol, bandaids and travel sized shampoo & conditioner.
  • Go on a diet to lose some weight. Check. This one I started in mid-January and I’ve lost 3 kgs in the last 6 weeks.
  • Get a haircut. Check. Got my scraggly ducktails lopped today because it usually takes my hair about 3 weeks to recover from the last haircut.
  • Decide what handbag to take. Check. This is a non-issue for me because I now carry a camera backpack; and don’t have hand or shoulder space for any other bag. I do need to scale my purse size down in order to be able to fit the purse with the lenses and camera.
  • Decide what shoes to take. Check. My trusty Sketchers and my black low heels normally make it into the bag.
  • Start thinking about what clothes to pack.
Hmmm. You know…aside from knowing that it’s gonna be spring in Hong Kong, I really don’t know what the weather is like in April.
Hmmm. I’m gonna need to have a conversation with DH and my mother in regards to whether we want to do any laundry in Hong Kong. OMG! Where do you do laundry in Hong Kong??? :scared1:

:scratchin Looks like I have a little research to do.

Is there anything else I’ve forgotten?

I must not have read the part yet that list the actual travel dates. I agree. Avoid Easter.

I wanted to get my scraggly ducktails (love it) lopped and lose some weight before my trip too, but sadly I never accomplished either. Looks like you are ahead of the game.
