Hong Kong Disneyland in trouble

Disney doesn't own the park. The government of China does. Disney gets a management fee.

Not true actually. The park is owned by Hong Kong International Theme Parks which itself is jointly owned by the Walt Disney Company and the Government of Hong Kong (which is slightly different to the China, but it's mostly a technicality). If wikipedia is correct Disney's holdings are currently at 48%.

Tokyo is the park that Disney does not own at all.

disney and the hong kong government have been knocking heads for awhile now. Disney wants to upgrade the park and hong kong doesn't want to spend the money. disney is a minority owner but hong kong wanted disney to put up the money for the attractions. I think they have finally agreed because rumor has it disney offered to sell it's share of the park back to the government but had stipulations that the government realised wasn't in hong kong's best interest. Unfortunately they have the same arrangement with the chinese government as well and also disney has learned the words red tape so I wouldn't plan on too many additions to either park once this one opens.

Disney should note the disaster that has been paris with the lack of updates and maintenance through the years, finally things have been happening over the last couple of years and Disney have taken a greater stake in the business

By the end 2017 Paris will be in great condition.

Really? I've heard the Hong Kong government has been pushing Disney for a second gate and there are plans in place for it but Shanghai, China's Economy and such things have put it on hold.

I believe I also recall a certain 'spirit' somewhere saying that very thing.

As I posted elsewhere Hong Kong has multiple problems.
  • It's one of the smallest parks and it has a relatively small number of attractions which hurts the repeat visitor business
  • It has the smallest capacity of all the parks which puts a revenue limit on things at the best of times
  • Hong Kong itself has been hit hard by political unrest which has reduced tourism in general
  • The weakening Chinese economy has substantially reduce the number of visitors from China
The drop this year from last was pretty horrific but it is the result of a very particular combination of events and even then we're talking about a net loss of only $19 million. Not catastrophic unless numbers continue to fall. I would think the biggest worry is the hotel occupancy. Down to 79%, that's not a "Disney" percentage.

We visited Hong Kong Disney in April and it was a ghost town. We were able to just walk on most rides, and only wound up spending a couple hours at the park and rode everything we wanted to ride. Visiting Tokyo Disney a week later was the exact opposite.

Like a previous poster said, Hong Kong is at a time of political unrest. There is a lot of conflict against tourism from China as well as some recent changes made by the government. The result is a lot of protest and riots, with the latest being early February. Not to forget the constant conflict between residents and the police force in regards to the violence used during riots..

All in all, its a mess out there.

However, when my sister went last week she said it was very busy with visitors (mainly from China) adversely, this resulted in a very filthy park...
