And how many times do we hear "You HAVE to vote. It's your DUTY." So, now there are a bunch of people that you feel shouldn't have voted because they didn't vote before? Regardless of the issues, some people were inspired to now vote for whatever reason. Everyone gets a voice. Obviously, one candidate inspired more people.

I beg your pardon. I KNOW how and why I voted. People have their own reasons for voting for what and whom they choose. Just because you may not agree with their reasons or understand them or even KNOW what they are, doesn't mean they aren't legitimate. You are so out of line.

Right now I am the most hopeful, energized and optimistic than I've been in a very long time. I am PROUD to be an American right now because they made the right choice.......for the right reasons, IMO.

While I realize that there were some "new" voters who voted for the reason you are insinuating, I also think that there were many, many young people who voted for the first time. There was nothing really in the last election to inspire young people, Bush vs. Kerry wasn't overly young person oriented. It was all about the war. Obama offered something new and accessible to young people so there were many 18-30 year olds who had never been interested in the process before. They voted to change the world's view of the US, they voted to make sure they, their children and their parents have healthcare, they voted to bring their friends home from the war.

While there is some merit to your statement, I don't think it is the major issue.

I heard that from pretty much all of my family. Luckily for me we live in a blue state and their votes were irrelevant. I don't know how I came to be in this family of mine. I am certainly a black sheep.

how would you know what I am clear about? I never even said who I voted for....
my point is so many people are voting for the wrong reason and no matter where I go, work, grocery store, etc....people seem so willing to spout out their thoughts.

I wasn't aware that there was a right and a wrong reason to vote. I don't feel that people who have different opinions than me just shouldn't be allowed to vote. People are absolutely able to "spout their thoughts" even if those thoughts are different than yours.

I think part of the reason for the huge influx of voters this year is due just as much to the people's great disappointment with Bush at this time as it is to the hope and change they see in Obama. People are angry about the way this country has been heading and that motivates them to vote.

Interesting twist. For the past several months, the right was so quick to criticize the Obama Supporters whenever race was brought up.

You don't get to decide whether other people have "good enough" reasons to vote. You just don't. This country is built on the idea that everyone gets to participate in the civic process, black and white, smart and dumb, old and young, informed and not so informed. I agree with you that there are a ton of people out there who aren't as informed as I wish they were. But neither of us get to determine who is "worthy" or "not worthy" enough to vote. And that's a good thing! That is one of the wonderful things about our country!

There is another way of thinking about all those "new voters". A lot of them are people who were turned off of the civic process in the past. They thought their vote didn't matter, they thought their "representatives" didn't represent them, they thought the issues brought up by the representatives weren't relevent to their lives, etc. Now they are excited! They are so darn excited that they invested in being a part of the civic process! And maybe in the future, they'll continue to be invested in politics and in being citizens.

All the new folks getting out there is a good thing. It's a GOOD thing for America.

People voted for McCain because Obama is black.
People voted for McCain because he was a soldier
People voted for McCain because he was a republican
People voted for McCain because of his VP

People vote for President for many reasons.

But to insinuate that even a significant number of 50 million people voted for Obama for something other then the issues is sad.

Oh, no! I'm not even meaning to comment on the election results, I think Obama would have won, regardless of these votes. My comment was solely to point that how sad is this? It's 2008 and I personally know people who voted for someone because of race. Don't get me wrong, I also know someone who voted for McCain solely because his parents always voted Republican. To me, it's just sad when someone votes for a reason other than the character or issues of the candidate.
