Okay, I have to write a report on emerging trends that have been triggered by the events of 9/11 and I'm having a hard time getting started.

Can any of you smart people give me some good ideas to get me jump-started? Please? (I looked for a begging smilie, but couldn't find one.) ;)

--Disaster recovery planning and testing.
--Fewer foreign students at US universities due to new visa restrictions.
--Large concrete planters appearing in front of vulnerable buildings.

Thanks Karen C!

I REALLY like the one about fewer foreign students, that should lead to some really interesting research on the potential long-range impact that could have on the U.S. influence in the world.

Sending US jobs overseas wasn't so much of a macroeconomic issue as long as we maintained our place as the world's innovator. When the best and the brightest come here to learn and do research, our economy thrives.

My daughter attends a large public research university and between budget woes and student visa issues, their administration is really worried about maintaining an edge. You might want to search the websites and student newspapers of some of the major research universities to get some facts for your homework.

I am not sure on this one but possibly more people driving rather than flying.

I found some research on this too! Apparently the drive/cruise vacation is really picking up since a lot more people are afraid to fly. That's supposedly the reason we are seeing so many more ports of embarkation than we used to.

Deb in IA - I remember the flag lapel pins from Desert Storm too. I think they might be more related to having troops deployed than 9/11 itself. Kind of like yellow ribbons? Of course having troops deployed is a result of 9/11 so I could probably make the case there.

Thanks for the suggestions KarenC! I found several really good resources about the student visa issues and the trend is that more and more Middle Eastern and Asian students are now chosing to study in Great Britain and Australia. FYI - Not only are top schools worried about losing that academic talent, but apparently foreign students also contribute $12 billion dollars to our economy between paying for thier tuition and living expenses. That's definitely going to be some good info for my assignment.

That's for the great ideas guys! Keep 'em coming!

:D

New luggage and carry-on screening procedures.

New "forbidden" items -- scissors, nail clippers, etc.

New security measures in large venues (WDW screening backpacks, for example).

Terror alert system (those green, yellow, orange, red levels).

Internet terror trackers -- I heard about a group of homemakers who go on the Internet and pose as Islamic extremist, and have caught a traitor from the Seattle area trying to sell information about how to blow up a US armored tank.

More intense screening at Sporting Events, Theme Parks, Olympics, the Statue of Liberty, etc.. Heck I was even checked at a water park in Branson, Mo.
