Homewood Suites discounts?

We have our house on the market. If a potential buyer comes through with a reasonable offer, we'll need housing for a month or two while my husband finishes his job in this city and we look for a home in the city we're moving to (1-1/2 hrs away). So, apartments seem to require a 6 month lease and our families can't really accomodate us because we're a family of 5 (3 small boys). A place like Homewood Suites seems reasonable and they have a discounted rate for stays that are longer than 2 weeks, but it's still about $3000 a month. Does anyone know of any less expensive options, or if there are any discounts/codes for this chain (Hilton)? Thanks!

No discounts that I know of, but I just want to give my thumbs up for Homewood Suites. My son and I stayed in HS last year for over five months. The two BRs really are like apartments. You don't have to cook breakfast seven days a week or dinner four days a week, so that might help with the budget. Also, you will rack up a TON of Hilton Honors points...which could stretch out into a vacation somewhere else, if you plan it well (I spent two nights in CT at Christmas and three nights in a five-room suite at the Waldorf Astoria in NYC and STILL have over 100,000 points!).

They take pets, too. :)

Thank you, I'm happy to know it's a nice place. Yes, our grocery bill would certainly be smaller! It's doable, and our boys would surely love the novelty of it all!

While it's not a discount, make sure you sign up for the hilton Hhonors program because you can use the rewards points for free stays elsewhere!

You could probably find cheaper rates at a place like Extended Stay America, which is more designed for long stays. I get emails from them with discounts all the time, so it might be worth signing up for them. There are several other similar chains.

VRBO.com or homeaway would be cheaper. i have found nice places for 1k to 1500 a month.

Another option is to actually go to the hotel and talk with the manager on duty - in my experience they cannot negotiate a rate but will take the request to the General Manager who can. This does not always work but we have been successful with this method for a few extended business stays.

Good luck!

I have no idea on how you do this but I've heard of people subleasing. You may be able to get a place for a couple of months that way. It may even be a house. The only problem there would be no furniture. But if you don't mind moving in your own furniture it may work. You can live on air mattresses for a while, too.

There may also be people who need to go away themselves for business trips and they may sublease with a furnished place.

I think your best option may be to talk to a real estate agent in the new area. They manage properties and may be they can make an exception to the regular rules about leasing. You'll need an agent when you buy your own place; so, they may work with you for the future sale of you buying another place. I presume you will buy when your old place sells. There may be places you can get with the option to buy, but rent now.

Maybe, take a new look at different options like renting a campsite to live for a while. Maybe, you can rent an RV that would be cheaper than rent. I know you can get those for any time spans you want. Going cheap like buying a tent could work. Fortunately, summer is coming; so, this is doable.

If your family is willing to take on one boy then maybe think about splitting your family up for a few months. If everyone lives close by it may work. You keep the one that you feel needs the most help. Offer to pay other family and maybe everyone will be more open to the idea.

Sometimes, it could be cheaper to get two resort rooms with a door between rooms at a cheaper hotel. Some are set up; so, the kids don't have access to a door in both rooms. These places will give you a better deal if you're doing it for a month or longer.

Finally, there's no real reason you need to move away to your new area. Think about renting where you still are; it maybe a cheaper option.

I'm just trying to think out of the box; you never know what may work.

I have a friend selling their place now and it's looking very dismal. Their place is absolutely immmaculate, updated, and in a good neighborhood. They've been on the market for a month without even a look and they have a chain realtor. They're in a suburb away from a big city. They haven't had an open house yet, but it looks like they will already have to reduce the price. She is thinking it's going to take at least 6 months to sell in this market. They are prepared to take a beating. I'm telling this story because you may be very optimistic about selling your place in such a short time.

Well, our house has been on the market for 5 months. We finally got an offer, but a very low one and someone who needs to close at the end of May. We countered their low offer and said we'd accomodate their close date. If they accept, we'll need to get housing to finish up school/work in the city we're in now. It's not a big city, Homewood Suites is all we have for extended stay-type places. We're already looking at homes in the city we're moving to, but I doubt anyone else would accept a closing date so soon that we could move straight from one house to the other. That would be optimal, and we'd drive back here to tie things up, but quite unlikely. Our little guy is just a year old, I don't think he could camp for that period of time. All of our family is close to where we're moving to, and will help wherever they can (I just wouldn't ask anyone to take us all in...). No big deal, we'll do what we need to do. I had just been seaching for discounts and turning up nothing, so thought here might be a good place to check as well. I appreciate your suggestions. Now just praying for them to accept our counter and be done with this! Thank you.

I have successfully used the Hilton MVP rate (www.hiltonfamilymvp.com) multiple times, and I know it does apply at some Homewood Suites. I don't want to get into a discussion on who "should" or "shouldn't" use corporate codes - just wanted to pass it along as it has saved me money for a few stays. It is a widely used discount rate that from what I can tell and what I have read is open to anyone with a Hilton Honors number. You can google it and see how widely it is discussed and used.
