Dh and I looked into the Abeka DVD program this year too! It looks like it will be great! My only problem for my family is the cost, and it would be nice if you were allowed to keep the dvds to use for the next child. Let us know how the program works for you!!! :goodvibes

We actually used the the video version several years ago for DD. I was very impressed with it, but she got bored quickly. Not because the work was too easy, but because it was hours of sitting in front of the TV. She just preferred being taught by me, and having active conversations and hands on visuals rather than just following along with the TV class. I'm anxious to see how she likes the Grace Academy.

Now my DS is a different story! He pays no attention to me! I ordered the sample DVD for K5, and honestly in 5 minutes of watching that he learned to write 3 cursive letters, and it stuck with him better than the manuscript letters that took me weeks to drill into him. He loved listening to the "TV" teacher, and actually asks to "watch" school. He thinks it's FUN, and the learning just comes naturally!
I can't wait to see how he does this year with the full curriculum.

It truly is about finding what style of learning suits your child the best. ONE of the greatest blessings of homeschooling!

As for price, I know Abeka does give a price break to families with children who will be participating in the same grade at some point. I think you're given so much credit for reusing some of the text books and teacher's keys or something like that. They also have a payment plan.

It is still fairly expensive, though when compared to private school (our only alternative around here), we still come out ahead, and better for it!

Good luck with whatever curriculum you decide to go with. I'm sure you'll do great! :)

I start homeschooling my 5 year old this fall. :earseek: Getting curriculum is a nightmare! :guilty:

Are you just having problems finding a curriculum that you like?

This is my first time on the Community Board (I usually just hang out on the trip planning boards) but I'm glad I found this thread!

I homeschool my DD14 - last year was our first year and we LOVED it!

Would love any advice on preparing for college when you HS - DD wants to go to a major State University (Auburn).

If you'll be talking about preschool curriculum then I am interested! I do not homeschool, but will begin teaching a 3yo preschool class in the fall. I am new to this so very open to ideas. As we speak, actually, I am working on my September lesson plans. My school uses the Wee-Learn curriculum by Lifeway, but it's more of a guideline than anything. We are free to add/change/supplement anything we want. I am nervous but excited!

I am interested also.My DS9,DS7,and DD6 go to a great public school but I work w/ them alot at home.I have two that are "gifted" and need challenging and one that needs extra help in reading.Homeschooling has always been one of our options if we ever need to.

I am interested. I taught in public schools for six years and then private school for one year. When I had my daughter I knew that I wanted to homeschool. This will be my 6th school year to homeschool. My daughters will be in 5th and 2nd grades. I use A Beka curriculum, and that is all that I have ever used. I thought about switching to the DVD program too. It is just so expensive!
I love homeschooling!!!!!!!! :teeth:

Sure, if you don't mind a public school teacher who public schools her kids on board! I'm interested in all education.................ds always needs a bit more than usual, being GT and ADHD on top of that................I hate the stories of kids not being challenged enough..........my classroom is tiered and there's always plenty to do..........fun stuff, not just filler...............I've been fortunate in having ds in my school so I was able to steer him toward teachers who would challenge him well..............we've been very lucky in getting some teacher/program/curriculum that helped fill in his dead time each year. This year he switches to our new neighborhood school while I stay in the old one...........I won't be able to watch as carefully, crossing my fingers!

Bumpity Bump Bump!!!! We just took our 2 youngest, ages 10 and 7, out of public school in April. Our 2 oldest, ages 14 and 12, will NOT be going back to school in the fall! Our reasons are academic, social, religious and personal!! I love being able to pick our own curriculum, move at our own speed, sleep a little later in the morning, and vacation when we want to! I do not visit this forum often, DVC is my fav, but I would LOVE a homeschool forum. It would be great for folks who are just interested in knowing more about homeschooling too! We are using Sonlight, Saxon math, Apologia science, How Great Thou Art, Memoria Press Latin, and Rosetta Stone Spanish. I also plan to add, tweak, supplement, and adjust the Sonlight stuff as needed. I feel a great peace about this, we have thought about homeschooling for years and things just finally got to the point that public school was not meeting our needs. We live in a highly rated district, but with 28 to 30 kids in the class they really have to teach to the norm. Three of my kids were falling throught the cracks. Oldest is gifted and has been BORED in school for years. My younger 2 just need more one on one than any ps teacher could ever give. Anyway, love the dis and love homeschooling so count me in!!!

I don't homeschool per se....but I DO enrich my boys at home and I would be very interested in a homeschool board. :)

My son attends school but I too would be interested in supplementing his education.

However, in her school they are given the work to do. The teacher, say gives them an hour to do it. She finishes it up in 10 min. Then has to sit on her hands and wait for the rest of the 50 min. for the rest of the class to finish. Since that happens with all her classes she is terrible bored. They don't want her doing things the others aren't and they don't seem to want to give her more advanced work to do as that means more work for the teacher. I am sorry but I don't know many kids that like to just sit for most of the day doing nothing. The only thing they have allowed her to do is read. She has read so many books, but even that starts being boring when that is all you do. When we homeschooled her as long as she understood the work and was able to do it easily we would go on to the next thing. She was always learning something. At grade 5 she is NOT in a work environment, she is in a learning environment

I just don't understand--She is finishing in 10 minutes, but she is going backwards in her classes. That means she may rushing and getting things wrong.

I do think the teachers should check her work and say--"Hey, Don't rush. Sure, you got it done faster than the others, but you aren't getting them correct. You are going backwards. And as your teacher, I don't want that to happen. So take your time and answer the questions correctly so you can move foward in my class."

And then, once she has mastered the subject, they should give her extra work that enriches her. That is terrible to make a child just sit there.

Good luck in whatever you decide!

You can add me to the list. When my DD is "preschool" age, I want to start homeschooling. I have no idea how to start. So getting a headstart and seeing what others are doing will help a lot! Thanks :flower:

hentob she is not getting the answers wrong. She is getting them all right. She has already done this work so it is not new to her and even if it were new once she grasps a concept she has it, and it doesn't take her long to grasp it. However, she is now getting so bored that she is starting to not care about school. She does the work but there is no interest there at all. When we were homeschooling her there was an interest in many things and because we were pushing her to learn there was always something to do. Now that she is a preteen I am concerned that if she doesn't get more interesting work and more advanced work she will end up dropping out of school as soon as she is able. What a terrible waste of a mind.

I would be interested. DD is only 2, but we are seriously considering homeschooling her when the time comes.

I totally misunderstood you. I see now--She isn't getting bad grades (which I took as going backwards)--But she isn't being pushed. I agree. What a waste.

Shame on the school. That is sad that they don't have enrichment programs for the gifted.

I can see why she should be homeschooled. I hope you guys can work something out. . :grouphug:

I would be interested also. We are moving from to FL this fall and DD(just turned 10) is leaving her gifted school. We have not been able to find much information about the new school so there are just so much uncertainty. Homeschooling is an option.

Another interested homeschooling mom!!!! I haved homeschooled my Dtwins7 since they were 3. I started out with A BEKA Nursery/preschool just to see if they were interested and if I could do it. We LOVED it, so I thought I'd try K4 with A BEKA.....more to see if I could REALLY do it, because they were progressing so fast. Loved it again.......this fall we're starting Third Grade, yes, with A BEKA. The kids love it, I love it, my husband loves it. Especially since we've been ahead of schedule every December and we can take the month off to go on vacation to WDW!!!!!!!!!!!! Not that we get to stay a month :guilty: ...usually 3-4 days, but we love having all that time off to refresh and get totally caught up in family and the holidays!!!!!! I could go on and on and on about the benefits of HS, but I'll save them for the HS board if we get one! ;)
