Dh and I looked into the Abeka DVD program this year too! It looks like it will be great! My only problem for my family is the cost, and it would be nice if you were allowed to keep the dvds to use for the next child. Let us know how the program works for you!!!
We actually used the the video version several years ago for DD. I was very impressed with it, but she got bored quickly. Not because the work was too easy, but because it was hours of sitting in front of the TV. She just preferred being taught by me, and having active conversations and hands on visuals rather than just following along with the TV class. I'm anxious to see how she likes the Grace Academy.
Now my DS is a different story! He pays no attention to me! I ordered the sample DVD for K5, and honestly in 5 minutes of watching that he learned to write 3 cursive letters, and it stuck with him better than the manuscript letters that took me weeks to drill into him. He
loved listening to the "TV" teacher, and actually asks to "watch" school. He thinks it's
FUN, and the learning just comes naturally!
I can't wait to see how he does this year with the full curriculum.
It truly is about finding what style of learning suits your child the best.
ONE of the greatest blessings of homeschooling!
As for price, I know Abeka does give a price break to families with children who will be participating in the same grade at some point. I think you're given so much credit for reusing some of the text books and teacher's keys or something like that. They also have a payment plan.
It is still fairly expensive, though when compared to private school (our only alternative around here), we still come out ahead, and better for it!
Good luck with whatever curriculum you decide to go with. I'm sure you'll do great!
