*** Homeschool List ***

What I like too is that it is all just sitting out, buffet style for a couple of hours. It is very quick to get your food, almost never a line, and you serve yourself and then go. Much faster than going out to eat.

PS: Yes, FREE is way cheaper than anything else! HA!

Wow, that is close to what they serve concierge level at WL. Throw in a few afternoon snacks and I bet you can beat the $$$ price you would have to pay for Disney concierge.:rotfl: Not that we have ever paid for it, but DH adn I were upgraded during free dining year before last. It was awesome, but no way could my budget minded attitude ever justify the price. Residence Inn however, I could do!!

That sounds great! Add that to the food stipend they give your DH and you guys got it made!

So you're going in November? Hopefully you can see the christmas lights and maybe go to MVMCP!

It is typically the 2nd week of November so we may miss the lights. I am actually going to ask DH if we can stay the week after too and have a vacation since we are already down there, but we will see

Hi,

I am a home schooling, SAHM of two. We decided to take them out of public school last October. My 7 yo daughter was threatened by a classmate, and the school did not take it seriously. When you add that to having to threaten to sue the school board to put my 6 yo son in special ed (according to his IEP), I decided it was just too much.

My daughter was reading on a 6th grade level when she left K, but her school did not feel she was gifted enough for any of the gifted programs. My son was in a horrible car accident almost 3 years ago, and has severe emotional problems and learning disabilities (among other things) and was spendign most of the day being 'babysat'.

We are using SOS for my daughter, and a combination of hooked on phonics and handwriting without tears for my son. (HWT is a special handwriting program written specifically for challenged children by an OT)

Now my Disney connection. Last month we decided to take our Income tax refund and plan a field trip to Disney! We leave in 8 days! I am a planning freak, so this has been hard on me. Not having much time to plan is driving me crazy, but the kids are really looking forward to it! My daughter is getting through with her classwork extra early so she can research Disney! My son is wanting to get some Disney books for him to 'read'. My older children are complaining because we NEVER went to Disney when they were kids! I offered to take my grand daughter with us, but DIL isn't ready to be away from her that long yet (she is only 5 and a half months old)!

It is really gtting late here, and Grand daughter arrives at 6 in the morning to start my day, so I'd better run!

Fun Jeanne!! My DH surprised me awith a long weekend to DL last year-with a months notice. No kids went with us so it wasn't too hard to plan, BUT it was the shortest notice ever for a Disney trip for me. I usually plan a year ahead of time!! I had to research in a hurry and thankfully found a great poster on the DL boards here on the Dis and it was a wonderful couple get away!!

Enjoy! I highly recommend TGM for short notice high crowd times, if when you are going is high crowd.

Good luck in your homeschooling ventures-we did a short and sweet EPCOT world showcase unit study befoer going. My kids USED what they learned there so i was pleasnatly pleased about it.

Don't worry! I've decided on a Friday and left either Sunday (no kids but with a newly fixed well) or Monday (two kids).

It's been robotics nearly non-stop here. We're gearing up for the regional competiton at the end of the month. (FIRST Robotics) The kids on the team are learning all kinds of great things beside soldering, programming, etc. They're learning about communication ("I told them to check the pins and they said they did, but they hadn't"), planning (it ships Tuesday at noon and it's still not done), teamwork!, and so on. It's a huge task and with help, they're doing it. I'm loving the fact that they are learning so much about real work that they'll be able to take with them no matter what they end up doing for a living.

I'd really recommend any teens with a interest look into joining or forming a team for next year. It's also a great way for parents (nearly all of them Dads) to teach teens about all kinds of things, including sticking to a project when it gets tough. That's not something that can be taught sitting at a desk!

We went to an future enigneering event this week. There was a panel of engineers and engineering students that talked with the kids (Jr and Sr High) and one of them was talking about FIRST. I had never heard of it. My DS did Lego League but has now outgrown it. He is SO excited about doing this. I'm glad to hear good things about it.

I notices the words born in my heart. I too have two that were born in my heart. And I too have 3 older children who complain we did not take them as often as the little ones. Oh' well, things are different now financially. So we can take more trips.

I love seeing other mothers like me enjoying our children even the ones born in our hearts.:goodvibes

I am considering homeschooling my 9 year old next year and am just starting to research my options. I would love a Homeschool board to read, talk and hear about what it's like.

I started last year hsing my DS 9, 4th grade. We use Calvert School's program. We love it! It really frees us up as far as vacation time/family time (a great thing to have when DH comes back from military deployment). I really like KNOWING what my child is learning and going at a pace that matches his needs; ie: breeze through math, but we take more time on history. Good luck! Welcome to the HS board!

I noticed you were from Huntsville. Go to chefofalabama.org for information on getting started homeschooling in Alabama.:)

We also are starting homeschool in the fall for ds6. We are pretty sold on Calvert. Does anyone have any experience using their ATS program? This will be our first year homeschooling and we are very excited and nervous!:yay: Also, anyone is Phoenix, AZ area?

Thanks

We have used ATS the last two years with DS for fourth and fifth grade. I opted not to use it with my kindergartener but will use it from first grade on. They help evaluate your students work. You turn in your tests or progress reports to them and they grade or evaluate them. I was sold on it because gettting school transcripts is only an option IF you use ATS. We move a lot, so whenever I find a school that meets my standards, I might just want to put my kids back into the public system. This way I have something to show what and how my child has been doing for the period of time that they were in homeschool. I have to say though, the longer I do this, the more I think that I'll never go back to public school. We'll see.

Also, the Calvert Support is AWESOME!! They are quick to return phonecalls or you talk to an actual person during biz. hours. They are helpful in explaining things YOU, the parent might not understand, how to get around a "road block" that you are having as far as teaching goes. I can't say enough good things about our Calvert experience. They really set you up for success. I love the detailed, planned out lesson plans. Good luck! :)

Hi! I am new here around the DIS, but I have been interested in HS-ing for awhile. my kids are younger but I am already feeling pressure to sign my DD2 for preschool :confused3 I'm not sure which way we will go but I would love to hang around and get some ideas from other mommies!

welcome to newbies!! Thinking about it is the first step and you will be overwhelmed soon!! This is my 3rd year and it 'fits' us well. we enjoy the freedoms it allows. Someone asked me recently do the kids get homework-ha!!! Another perk to HS'ing. If I had a child that was 2-4 years old, and an older one or more to HS, i'd probably think about a MDO program. But i cannot really say since i have not had this situation. It is just what i 'think' I would do. Depending on finances of course too. i am also of the opinion that traditional schooling is fine, just not for us,not right now. I love the time I have with the kids and it is not all productive(complete honesty here!!) but mostly it has to be, I guess!!

See` ya'll!

VENT WARNING!:headache:

I'm about ready to send them to public school. If it weren't for the fact that we travel so much, I probably would. Here's the situation...I've started back to school for my Master's degree. Hubby hasn't worked since Thanksgiving and doesn't look like he's going to anytime soon. I'm also self-employed and have 22 shows to do this year, so my getting a "real job" isn't happening, either. I've been working my hiney off, sleeping about 4 hours a night. I have my schoolwork to do, housework, cooking, shopping, run my business (including hand-dying shirts), phone calls, any type of business-related work, run DDs to lessons, I coordinate an American Girls Friendship Club within our homeschool group, plus trying to homeschool DDs. Hubby takes out the trash. Seriously. I've been having him do more and more as far as housework/cooking, but he GRIPES and complains at every step. He's also a total grouch dealing with the kids.

They are now 33 lessons (6 days) behind in their schoolwork (we use Switched On Schoolhouse), a lot of which has happened b/c I left him in charge of it last week when I had a show to do. I simply cannot do it all anymore, it's killing me. My stomach is a wreck from the stress of what I have to do combined with the lack of income. I turned off the internet and told them NO MORE until they get caught up. What do I find this afternoon??? Hubby, sitting at HIS computer letting them watch him play Webkinz. :sad2: :headache:

How on earth do I get him more involved? (is it possible?) He is SO mid-century and thinks that it's all "woman's work", but HE won't go get a job so I don't have to work so hard. I simply do not have the time to hover over DDs to make sure they are getting it all done and I don't think there is anything wrong with him taking some responsibility. They are HIS kids, too, and HE was more adamant about homeschooling than I was.

Even if you don't have advice, I'd sure appreciate some pixies.

Hi there! Is this it? I noticed the OP was saying they wanted to get one started. Is there another place to ask questions about homeschooling or is this the place? Please give me the link if this is not it.
I originally posted my question in the wrong spot so please follow this link to my op.
