I need ideas for an educational activity at Disney for a 14 year old boy, specifically about Japan.

I know all you homeschoolers have great ideas.

TIA

try posting on another thread on this board called "Homeschool Chat" - you will get more responses I think.

One great thing in Japan we found was they have the Epcot map in Japanese. This was really cool and the kids tried to find out how to make words in Japanese (not easy). Also, the people in the Japanese pavillion are from Japan and can answer any of his questions!

Here are my ideas so far. I'd love some feedback without having to swim through the homeschool thread. :) (You don't have to be a homeschooler to give us great ideas.)

Disney Homework

Required:

• Relax.
• Have fun.

From the following, choose what works for you and your family:

In the Magic Kingdom

• Visit Stitch’s Great Escape. (Apparently, the Japanese are wild about Stitch.)
• Pick up and browse the Japanese version of the Magic Kingdom map. See if you can recognize hiragana, katakana, and kanji.

At Epcot

• Pick up and browse the Japanese version of the Epcot map. See if you can recognize hiragana, katakana, and kanji.

In the Japanese Pavilion at Epcot

• Eat Yaki-tori/define yaki-tori
• Meditate on the rock garden.
• Watch the taiko drum performance.
• Photograph the torii gate.
• Photograph the pagoda.
• Photograph the koi.
• Introduce yourself to a Japanese cast member. Use the phrases, “hajimema****e,” and “dozo yoroshiku.”
• Ask one or more cast members to sign something, such as the back of this paper, with their name in kanji. Ask them to explain the meaning to the kanji.

Write a Disney-inspired Haiku.

Sounds like you have a good plan!!Is this for public school, or just something fun? If it's for public school-I think it's enough. Also-make sure to take his picture in Japan!

The student is homeschooled, but he studies Japanese language and culture with me. (I'm a family member, by marriage, and we live in the same town.)

My intention is that he only do some of the assignments.

They leave tomorrow. I'm green with jealousy. :tilt:

We just came back from a hs convention. There was a vendor selling a curriculum based on EPCOT and MK. It looked great!! It was only $15-$30. You could visit their website vacationeducationbooks dot com.

I will send this along. They probably don't have time to access it, but it sounds like a great resource.
