This is budget related because I don't want to pay for a trip to Steak 'n Shake, but my dd4 loves their cheese sauce. I googled for a knock off recipe of their cheddar cheese sauce, but couldn't find one. I can't seem to find any other suggestions either--anyone have any good cheese sauce recipes in their cupboards that they'd like to share?? Thanks!

I'm not sure what the recipe is, but it tastes exactly like jarred Cheez-Whiz to me.

That's probably what it is in all reality--I was hoping to find a way to make it at home though--leave out some of the preservatives and stuff.

Didn't there used to be a site where you could search for recipes of favorite recipes of restaurants. Copy cat or something?:confused3

Oh i love steak n shake - i eat it down in fl. when we visit my parents! Wish there were some here in NYC!

my cheese sauce isn't much better than cheez whiz (which is why I don't make it often) but:

melt velveeta with milk (I am not a rule follower so I just wing it) and add shredded cheddar at the end to "cheese" it up.

i have to say i always learn something new when i go on the boards. i often realize how few restaurants across the country seem to set up in washington state. dunkin donuts - no. boston markets - no. sonic - no. i do have to say, though, that the name "steak n' shake" doesn't sound very appealing. is it just cheesesteaks?

Yeah, we're lacking out West. But at least Washington has Schlotzsky's! :cool1:

Steak 'n Shake is actually quite decent for faster food--everything is cooked to order so their drive-thru takes a while. Our nickname for the drive-thru also happens to be "MIStake 'n Shake" because they always screw up something--however the food is tasty and I think there's more variety than McD's.

Does your steak 'n shake have a "yellow" cheese sauce or more of a "white" cheese sauce?

It would make a difference in the recipe.

In our city (where Steak 'n Shake originated I think) most restaurants also offer a "horseshoe" which is toast with meat, cheese sauce and fries. Most better horseshoes use a white cheese sauce, so our Steak 'N Shake uses a white sauce, however other steak 'n shakes we have been to use the canned yellow cheese.

The white is much better.
