DS was invited to go to homecoming at another local high school with a group of his friends. The football game is tonight, and the dance is tomorrow night. They were all going together as a group, but just last night one of the girls asked him to be her date for the dance. They have never dated before, just been friends for a few months. DS still doesn't know if he is going to the game tonight or not.

My questions are:

1) What is the attire for boys for the homecoming dance?

2) Do we need to get the girl a mum for the dance, or do they just do those for the football game? Nothing like trying to find a mum at the last minute! :)

When I was in HS Homecoming was a nice shirt for the guy. I think we got corsages too but never a mum... that must be a local tradition for you guys :)

I wish I could tell you what guys wear but I see it is so varied now around here. Girls are buying formals that they would wear to proms and the guys will rent nice suits and even tuxes at some schools. When I went however, guys wore dress shirt & tie (with appropriate slacks) and if they had them a suit. Also most girls got a wrist corsages for the most part. They were easy to get and we'd just call a local grocery store that had a floral section and made them up for us. I'd have him ask his friends just in case for both though as I do think this varies a lot by area. Good luck :)

i attended 3 different high schools during my high school years...

and all 3 were different homecomings...at my first high school, it was a semi-formal event on saturday night...the game was usually friday.

my second high school was also a semi-formal...

the third...the dance was right after the football game on friday night and you wore whatever you wore to the game! it was very odd...

wish i could help more!!

Thanks. :) I guess it is such a regional thing that I need to find a mom with older kids around here to ask.

Welcome to the HS scene, Lisa. It only lasts four years for Craig, then you can work with Chelsea. :teeth:

Yep, best bet is to check with a mom who has been there, at your school. :sunny: Hope he has fun. :)

High School was the best six years of my life! ;) Dad and I were in the same class, you know....

My homecoming dances were immediately after the game so you had a bit of everything. It was dressy casual!

However, when I visited another high school, they weren't allowing any guys into the dance without a tie, and it wasn't homecoming! This should give you an idea of the era, but there I was with my blue hat (white headband), black shirt, and skinny purple tie and I had to slip it off (the tie) once I got inside to loan it to some poor guy with a plaid shirt.

Oh yeah, I was stylin'.....

Don't laugh, I met a girl that night that I dated steady for about a year and a half.

Of course, no one at my high school would date me.....

I can't comment on DS's attire, but being a gal who is from Texas, I know that mums are a huge thing (sometimes literally) for a girl to have on Homecoming. Have DS ask the girl specifically (or you can ask her mom) if she would like a mum, and if so, then what are her school colors, then you can take it from that point. That way, all bases are covered. Good luck!

Giant mums were what we had in college for homecoming. We wore them all weekend, not just to the dance.

When I was in high school (in the Dallas area), our homecoming dances were always right after the game. I have no idea what people would wear if the dance was the next night. We just wore kind of dressy football game clothes, like slacks instead of jeans.

I'm guessing that if the girls do dress up that mums aren't important at the dance, but he should get her one for Friday anyway. She'll want to be able to wear one to school. If things are like they were when I graduated in 1994, it should go at least to her knees. :)

Just wishing you luck Lisa! I've had a couple of friends at work talk about homecoming and it seems that the Mums are a pretty big deal. Sounded like the girls got their own though. He might could just ask her, they put all kinds of things on them. You are crafty enough to do one, couldn't be harder than dance or cheer costumes ;)

Our homecoming is next Saturday night and it is formal/semi-formal. I would see if you could find out what the attire is. My son came home from school saying "no jeans" so it must be casual. It was only at open house that I found out differently, so he would not have been dressed as he was supposed to be.

He is getting his "date" (he's just 14) a wrist corsage. From what I've heard, the mum's are for the day before for during school and the football game.

I like the wrist corsage idea, Kirby. :)

Yes, mums are a big deal here in Texas. I only wish we had had a bit of notice. It's rather impossible to get her a mum for school Friday when she only asks him late Thursday night.

I think I'll go buy the supplies for next year this weekend. :teeth:

My daughters homecoming game is tonight. The mums are worn at school all day and at the game but not at the dance. Tomorrow is the dance, it's semi formal/formal, no jeans. They get a small corsage to go with their dress. Also if pictures are taken at the dance it's around 35.00 and you get enough to split between the two of them. My daughter and her boyfriend are going out dinner before the dance but not everyone does.

Lisa,
Back here in Pa. the girls were either long or short dresses (we always hit the sales during the summer and buy left-over prom dresses for around $20-25!), the guys wear either dockers and a shirt and tie, or a shirt and sweater. Although at a few of the schools, the boys wear a complete suit.

The girls wear wrist corsages and I second calling your local grocery store that has a floral department!! DD's BF ordered her first corsage from the local florist and paid $35.00, the grocery store made a super nice one for under $10.00!! The boy should receive a boutonniere from the girl.
