Homecoming Kings/Queens - inspired by "how could they" thread

Does your high school elect a homecoming king and queen? Could someone tell me what the purpose of this is? Does it serve any purpose? Does it promote anything good whatsoever? It's just a popularity contest, right? There is no real criteria? Why do we still do this? Apart from tradition, why would schools even sponsor something like that?

My high schools did (the girls' schools nominated the candidates and the boys' schools voted on it.) I was a homecoming princess my junior and senior years and I loved the tradition.

My highschool only did prom king/queens.
You voted for couples throughout a certain time in the year, the top 3 got picked and you voted out of the 3.

Somehow, I got nominated, and somehow won.
I honestly was never really extremely popular, a lot of people knew me because I was really involved in theatre and other activities, and I just tried to be nice to everyone. I was well known and well liked I suppose, but not your typical 'prom queen'
I was by NO means the most attractive girl in my year, I'm 3 years out of highschol and still have NO idea how I managed to win.

(I think it was because of my DBF who I must say, was definitely the most attractive guy in our year, and I think whoever would've been with him at the time would've won queen to his king.)

Some schools in my area to prom king/queen by random draw--which I personally think is a TERRIBLE idea, because then kids who don't even know each other have to do the first dance sort of thing, AND it risks having kids be traumatized/made fun of (like the thread you're referring to)

I don't understand the whole point of prom king/queen to be honest.
I don't think winning prom queen in my graduating year really did anything for me (positive or negative) I don't think I'd be any different if I hadn't won. I do know that a lot of the more popular "mean girls" at my school did have a major hate-on for me afterwards though.

We don't have a king but our school does have homecoming queen and court. It's a pretty big deal here. Depending on whether it's football or basketball the players I believe nominate the girls. The sophomore and junior class have two maids. The senior class picks three I think then the student body votes on which of the senior girls are queen. The day that the game falls on there is a pep rally and the queen is then announced/crowned. Before the game each maid and the queen are escourted by usually two of the players. I've probably left something out but that's close.

no, it serves no purpose. i think its very silly, actually. and everyone always go so worked up about it, and there was always the "who is voting for whom" drama.

Our school had a different take on it. Our homecoming assembly was a "one-up" competition between the nominated couples. A little background, I went to a very diverse high school. About 45% hispanic, 30% white, 10% black, 10% asian, 5% other.
My senior year 10 males and 10 females are nominated, they match-up to do their walkout during the homecoming assembly. While with the females, it was usually a who is the hottest/most popular competition (but their were def. exceptions); the fact that their were so many cliques still made it diverse. For guys, it would be more random but always someone outspoken.
Some of the highlights was a guy came out in the complete tux, while the girl was in all pink Reese Witherspoon Legally Blonde get-up to the music of the movie. Another guy came out in a hospital gown, and the girl came out in a naughty nurse outfit. One girl came out in the damsel in distress, and our 300 lbs limeman came out as the Hulk. Finally our water polo captain was going to come out in his speedo, but was told he'd be suspended if he did. His date came out in the smoking hot short red dress. He had his parkha on and what'd he have under it? The same smokin hot red dress.

Our winner was our 300 lbs lineman (he wanted it and lobbied for it) and the queen was the girl who was a sweetheart who really wanted it. She wasn't the hottest, but she campaigned and got it.

My junior year, the king was a drama guy who looked like a cross between Seth Rogan and the fat guy from Superbad.

My school didn't even have Homecoming. Our big game is on Thanksgiving and we do a big pep rally, but no Homecoming (at the time, our cheerleaders has to be a certain height/weight because they handed down the uniforms and they were weighed every week and couldn't gain more than 2lbs....whew, talk about something that probably isn't allowed anymore!).

They did do prom king/queen. My friend won queen and I couldn't tell you who won king. It wasn't a big deal. Just another picture for the yearbook.

Now, class officers....that was a massive joke and a waste of an entire afternoon.

it was definatly a popularity contest at the highschool i went to and it totaly screwed up the clubs and organizations every year.

the way it worked was each official club along with a few elective courses (band, choir, drama, yearbook) got to elect a girl and a boy each (had to be seniors). so there was always a number of popular seniors who in a rush to ensure they got nominated joined as many clubs as they could at the begining of senior year. they would obligated themselves to doing things within the club (grab officers seats) and then as soon as the clubs made their selections they dropped out and basicily the clubs were back to square one 3 months into the school year

no purpose was served by the processes.

there was a big scandle my senior year-one of the nominees was a total "b" but she the incoming sophmores did'nt know it and they were buying into her smoozing with them. somehow someone managed to steal a few of the ballott boxes and ditch them so they were'nt found until the monday following homecoming. it was found that she should have been crowned first runner up (she did'nt even place in the final 3 at the ceremony) so while an announcement was made over the p.a., and the yearbook correctly listed her as 1st runner up-the game was over, the ceremony was over, the dance was over so it was a great big nothing.
