Home renovation projects

In the last few months we’ve done a few things around the house. My husband redid a section of the fence, built and installed two new gates on the fence, built new front steps (so happy with how they came out) and installed a few new light fixtures. I also just redid my craft room/makeup room and love the way it turned out. I just want to hang out in the one “girly” space in the house.

Can I cheat and show you what I did last year? I refinished my hardwood floor by hand! You can see I did not have an exit strategy in my second picture lol.

I need to refinish a very small area of our hardwood floors right near the front door. Our old cat got sick and peed on the area rug there several times before we noticed. It stained the floors. I read that if I strip them, sand them, hair bleach will remove/lighten the stains and then I can restrain and poly them. The whole thing will take a few days to complete. Just need to recover and find the time.

We planned to have some inside work done but I don’t want strangers in the house right now.

I find construction stressful and bored as I am, at least I don’t have the added stress.
We have a list a mile long just waiting for it to be safe for a handyman to come over and tackle tons of small projects including: a front door we can't open (we now use the side door), a patio door that needs to be painted, a can light fixture that's hanging down by wires from a vaulted ceiling, specialty grout that needs patching, etc. The water line to the fridge's ice maker and water dispenser need to be replaced. We're making do with a Brita pitcher and ice cube trays. We did let in the exterminator for our quarterly spray and the HVAC repair person.

We did do some minor work in our master bedroom though including paint, putting in sconces, and replacing wall plates. My DH is currently building a small boat in our garage. I'll be glad when he finishes because I miss parking inside. It's 100F today.

We planned to rip out the carpet in our basement and staircase and have new carpet installed (for sound reasons), but, you know, Covid. We’re waiting til the numbers in our area go down.

We’ve been building bookcases for my wall-of-books dream. 1 down- about 6 more to go!

I had dark spots too, I used a wire brush on them (gently) and they lightened up. I'd be afraid to use bleach, do you have an area you can test (like a closet)? Also, I'd make sure the smell was totally gone before putting a finish on the floor (or covering it with tile). I used a polyurethane specially made for floors, I think I killed some brain cells doing so. Good luck!

We’ve been in renovation mode for over 40 years in our pre 1850’s house. I’ve given up on it ever really being finished.
