:cat: :cat: ok, so we are due to have some work done in our basement and i'm wondering if anyone can offer some advice... they are going to be using a jackhammer to get up our cement floor. obviously this will bring with it a lot of noise. we have 2 cats. supposedly (as my boyfriend says) this will disrupt them tremendously. we were planning to close them in one of the bedrooms upstairs anyways so they wouldn't wander into the basement. but will they get too scared with all the noise? my boyfriend seems to think that i should take them to my mom's house and put them in the basement there. i have never heard the noise so i'm not sure, but i feel like it wouldn't be a continuous noise for 8-10 hours so they will be ok. can anyone help me with this? any experience at all with loud noise home repairs and pets? Thanks in advance!

My cats freak out and hide under the beds whenever we do work in our house. DH is a contractor, working on the house across the street, and their dog paces all day while DH is working.

When he had our basement finish they had to jackhammer the concrete for the plumbing. My cat was just fine. She found a place to hide, probably under my bed.

I don't have a cat, but all my friends do, so I'm around them frequently. In my experiance ANYTHING strange going on tends to make them hide under a bed. I don't think you'll have to lock them in the bedroom, they already be there hiding and you won't be able to get them to come out if you wanted to!

We recently had hardwood floors put in and knowing the cat would hide out in one of the bedrooms, we put everything she would need in there and closed the door.

A week later she was still nervous about noises in the house, but she did get over it.

I was glancing at your title and then thought to myself, well she'll be all right so long as they don't use a jack hammer. Lo and behold you will.

Years ago, we had a cat that was in the house when we had to jackhammer an opening for a bulkhead. According to my mother, the cat went absolutly crazy and she eventually had to have him put down.

I'd board the cats if possible on those days - they may be ticked at you for doing it but in the long run, they'll be better off.
