Well not to get rid of a cold per se, but to help with congestion and sinus problems, I am a big believer in a Neti pot. You can buy them at Walgreens and you can even see a demo on Youtube on how to use it!
Also vitamin C, lots and lots of fluids and sleep. Just the old fashioned stuff that works better than any OTC meds.
GSE: Grapefruit Seed Extract (liquid concentrate, the pills take too long) Just get a big glass of water/milk/juice etc add 10-15 drops + a bunch of sugar and within 10-15 minutes nose, throat, etc will clear up. I never would have believed it if I hadn't tried it.
Clove of garlic. If you have a juicer, just add it to that so you don't taste it. It really does help. I don't know how fast, but... Dr. Weil recommends this as well. We really like him.
I'll second the neti pot! It has drastically cut down my use of OTC cold medicines!
Also, if you're really stuffed up, eat a tablespoon of horseradish or wasabi paste. Holy cow, it'll about burn your mouth and sinuses out, but it works!

You want to support your immune system. The ickiness of colds is caused by the body's battle with the bug. You blow your nose and cough out the byproducts of your body working to kill the germs. So you want to support the work your body is so valiantly doing, and not falsely stop any of it (like cough supressants, etc). Vitamins, good pure juices, things that help the body along (that's why I think garlic and spicy foods help, b/c they make it worse to make it better), etc.
