Home Depot is HORRIBLE!

I agree with you. We have had several issues with our local Home Depot and special orders. (And we dealt with MANY employees, not just one). We will still go there for cash-and-carry items, but they will not get any more of my "special order" business.

ETA: Honestly the more I think of it the policy to not honor the sales tax if you have PAID for something in advance does not sound correct either. Does that mean that if you buy a washer and it is not in stock that they will not honor it?? NO! I have purchased many appliances on STW and that has NEVER been the policy.

I really think it all depends on the associate. You could be dealing with anyone from a new hire to a veteran. My brother is an electrician, and when putting his son through college, he picked up a part time gig at Home Depot. His expertise was highly valued, and when he quit, they begged him to stay.

We recently did a lot of renovations. We put in a bamboo hardwood floor. We bought the bamboo off the shelf at Home Depot and used our own flooring guy. The sales associate that helped us with the flooring was excellent. When it came to buying tile, we didn't get the same kind of help so we went to Tile America. There, we worked closely with designers who helped us find the best contractor for our bathroom. Home Depot was not going to give us the same personalized assistance.

We always buy paint there and have no issues. Our HD has a strong paint department. We have done very well with custom doors at the store, but had issues with our contractor...not HD's fault.

They have awesome classes for kids and in general, we are happy with our store.

The customer service at our Home Depot has definitely declined over the years. When I first moved here, it was almost too much - someone would pounce on me before I'd even gotten my bearings. But now it's the opposite. If I need help, I usually end up going to to the desk and having them send someone to whatever department.

We have 2 HD and 2 Lowes within a 20 minute drive from our house (in 3 different directions). Both HD and one Lowes have amazing customer service, at least as far as buying regular things, like tools, lumber, etc. The other Lowes, well, we purchased a freezer from there a few months ago (because the other Lowes didn't have one in stock, and HD was more expensive for the same thing), and the service wasn't stellar, but it wasn't so bad as to complain about.

We've also purchased a washer and dryer from each place (HD 8 years ago, and the good Lowe's about 2 weeks ago). No problems with either delivery or set up, but the Lowe's people actually hooked both up for me, and ran them to make sure no problems (like leaks, etc), whereas the HD people just delivered them to the spot I wanted them but did not hook them up at all.

Just like any other chain, you'll find good locations and bad ones, and good and bad employees at each. Want them to improve? Gotta contact corporate every single time there is an issue.

myy experienceis that Lowes haas the worst customer service
We bought a new AC a couple years ago and we got it home and it had been USED!! Like someone purchased it, put in thenew one, put the old one in the box - resealed it - and it was put back on the shelf without being inspected. (the closest lowes is an hour drive away) so my husband and dad had to go BACK to lowes (2 hours now on the road) and to be told that they had prob done it was NOT ok! The manager gave them a 25.00 gift card for their trouble (whoop) and they brought the NEXT AC home.

About 3 days later, I had a phone call from the district manager about the incident (apparently the manager put in paperwork due to the GC) and the district manager was APPALED at it and gave my dad (who was driving)) $300.00 in Lowes GC and Sam and I got 200 in our choice of GC (so we took Disney) - so they DID make it right, but it was ONLY due to us saying somethign to the manager and it being excliated that something was done3
