My DH is bascially a SAHD who does some freelance work nights, when I am home with the baby.

Yesterday, a friend of ours asked if he'd be interested in babysitting her 5 mo. old on Mondays and Tuesdays - since he is already home with our 7 mo. old.

What would the going daily rate be? We live in Southern NH - I know rates much vary widely around the country. We are just trying to decide if this arrangment would be worth it for us.

Thanks!
Kristi

Around here the general range is $150 - $200/ week for in home care.

just call some places listed in the paper and phone book and ask what the rates are. They do vary from area to area. I know when my dd need childcare at that age I paid $75 for 3 days.

In our area, part time daycare rates can range from $40-$55 per day. These are licensed home daycare provider rates -- I think that makes a diffference. Are a profession, there are lots of expenses that go along with it -- keeping up to standards, daycare insurance, arts, crafts, toys, training, etc.

It sounds like your friend is asking your DH to babysit and not necessary provide daycare. I think this is big difference between the two. If your friend is looking for someone to care for her child and be a playmate to your child, I don't think it's fair for your friend to pay anything except a babysitting rate ($3.50/hour??).

When I first started out doing babysitting, I only took care of friends and relatives children. This was one of the biggest mistakes I ever made. I would hear all the time that I wasn't being fair to them or I should give them a break because "we are friends". It was a nightmare that in the end could have broken friendships if it had continued. :( Once I went through the licensing process and started doing daycare as a business, I changed and became more confident in what I was providing. The parents no longer wanted to pay when I wanted to be paid, so we parted ways. I now only care for families I select to be in my daycare -- a big difference.

I live in Southern NH and do home daycare...I am NOT licensed as we do not have to be here in NH. I charge a daily rate of 35.00. If I were licensed, I would charge a bit more.

Thanks for the input everyone! I was thinking it should be around $30-40 per day. I'll have to wait and see what she offers. Kind of a tricky situation when it's a friend.
