Holy Crap..Just got a letter from the IRS!!! UPDATED PG.3

Brier Rose - I'm glad it all worked out for you. H & R Block will pay all penalties and interest if it was their fault!

I took the tax class in 2004, 2x a week for 12 weeks. It was not that hard. The teacher basically gave us all the answers to the quizzes and tests before we took them. So don't think they are all that qualified. I also completed my 30 hours to work for them again this year. I was able to take most classes online. If you failed the test, you could take it over. If you failed again, you just had to go through the class screens again to retake it. What I'm saying is, it wasn't that difficult to pass.

What I learned from working there is that yes there are some great tax professionals but there were a lot more workers that only sort of knew what they were doing but acted like they did.

A coworker last year made some MANY serious errors on many tax returns, including breaking confidentiality by giving a return to someone's girlfriend (a major IRS no-no). This year she was made manager.

Be very wary at Block, Jackson Hewitt etc..........

Good grief! You have to purchase "additional protection" to have them defend the return they prepared. I'm dying to hear that sales pitch.

I do my own (wages, a little investment income, itemized deductions). Have always used Turbo Tax, but got a deal on Tax Cut (H&RB's product) this year. Never again. Very poorly written software. Shows me owing $35 when it's $357. They tell me to change my systems fonts to an option not on my system.

It will take some time for the IRS to "straighten it all out", but since they owe you money, you should get some interest back also.

Just thought I would spread a little more sunshine.

Brier Rose - I'm so happy to hear that it all worked out for you. :cheer2: It certainly can be stressful in situations like this. Bet you slept well last night!

So glad to hear it is working out for you.

:scratchin Maybe I will go out to dinner tonight to celebrate on your behalf (I'm always looking for an excuse to go out to dinner). :rotfl2:

I really don't want to pile on, but there is a reason CPA's have a degree and certification testing and "tax-preparers" have a week of night school.

My sentiments exactly. My neighbor who is such a goof ball became an H&R Block Tax Preparer & then we all got to hear how much the neighbors were worth too. I know a lot of people use them & I'm sure they can do a good job (depending who you get) but why mess with something so important like your tax returns? You're probably better off doing them yourself with one of those tax filing computer programs. We have used a CPA for the past 15 years & we have had no regrets. Oddly enough, we get way more money back now too then when we used to go to the H&R Block people! :confused3 Really, they don't cost all that much more either. Our CPA charges double but we feel it's worth it.

I would definitely contact the office you had your taxes done at & hopefully they will stand by their tax preparer & fix up the whole mess. I'm so sorry that happened to you. I hope you can have it remedied quickly & painlessly!

I'm sorry I just jumped in & blurted out my thoughts without reading the whole thread....anyway, so glad it all worked out for you! Sounds like you have to be careful no matter where you go...but good points were made about looking over your own tax return for any major errors. (Well maybe not all are so obvious but we do scan over them.)

Glad you had a great dinner too! :thumbsup2

Glad it all worked out for you.

One of my best friends just became a CPA after years of doing taxes (mostly business, but some personal) at an accounting firm. In all of her stressing over the exams, we talked about the different parts of accounting-because there are many things she's never done. However, tax law is second nature to her. Not so her boss-she specializes in audit.

I'm a turbo tax girl myself. If my mom, who did taxes for many clients every year, would use it for her own, it was good enough for me! She'd get the IRS letter EVERY year, because she and stepdad got Railroad Pension, not Social Security. After paying penalties for the past five years, my stepdad has now received back three checks for overpayment-the exact amounts they were penalized! Just goes to show that even the IRS makes mistakes.

When we first hired our accountant a few years ago, he recovered $1500 that H&R Block had missed the year before. I'll never use H&R Block. There's just something about buying your tax preparation at Sears that screams "unreliable."
