Hi there,

On the DDP and going to WDW for the 3rd time. We have been to Sci-Fi (loved it) and Prime Time (don't mind it) and want to try another MGM place. Which would you choose? Hollywood & Vine or Hollywood Brown Derby... (not sure if I got the names right).

You got the names right :thumbsup2

I've probably seen 1 person out of about 50 talk highly about Hollywood & Vine, whereas I've heard nothing but good things about the Hollywood Brown Derby(ok, maybe one bad for service only) .

We have ADR's for the Fantasmic Package on the free dining plan for September at HBD. I'm so excited and the menu looks fabulous.

It's 2 TS while H&V is 1 TS on the DDP, so you might take that into account too.

We're excited to try it and think that it's worth it to us for 2 TS. If you don't want to use 2- I'd pick Mama Melrose in a heartbeat over H&V! I, of course can only speak for the many reviews I've read and research I've done on the two when trying to pick a restaurant to do the FDP at. Although we have eaten at Mama Melrose and it was great- we just wanted to try something new! :)

They are really two completely different classes of restaurant. One is a two bagger, signiture, the other is a one bagger buffet. I don't think I'd be putting em up against each other myself. I think since you're on the dining plan the question to ask is would you rather have Brown Derby as a two credit or one of the others like CA Grill, Jiko, Citrico's or AP? And if the answer is one of the above, then I'd probably suggest H and V. as your fantasmic meal. If not, then try the Brown Derby.

Hollywood and Vine is running 84% positive on Deb's site, with an average rating of 7.2

Brown Derby is also running 84% positive on Deb's site with an average rating of 8.0.

We had solid but not spectacular food at H and V. We had a large variety of hot foods, the salad bar wasn't all that big on variety there but it was good. The Deserts were great. I was disappointed in that the beef on the carving station was flank steak rather than a better cur of steak or a rib roast. Don't get me wrong though it was good flank steak. Really good. The Turkey was really good. Pasta's were good. Everything was to proper temperature. It was good all around, but not great. Nice variety and a decent amount of dishes but would have liked to see something with a bit more adventure to it.
I'd give it about a 7 on Deb's scale. The kiddo gave it a 10. It had a lot of good kiddo stuff that night.

IMO, H&V is mediorce at best. Certainly not worth waiting in line for. Especially disappointing is that they give you one slice at a time of the meat--flank steak, or whatever it is, then act like they begrudge you that. My dd8 asked for more and was rudely told "you eat that first, then come back for more". She was hungry and wanted to eat her meal, not keep getting up to beg for it one piece of meat at a time. I simply told them to put more on the child's plate, we're paying for it. I hate confrontations, but I'm not going to stand there and watch my kid go hungry when we're paying for it. Its not a soup kitchen. I've had better food at a Ryan's or Luby's. Forget that place!

Brown Derby is a very nice signature restaurant, great food and superb atmosphere - it's my DHs favorite in MGM. H&V is ok for a buffet, but it's a run of the mill establishment, no ambience.
