I read this post over tipping for more than a year so I’m very aware that its a very hot and heated item. The post always become very hateful and have to be closed.

That fact only should say enough about the whole system. Nobody likes it, so get rid of it and pay everyone a normal fee so they won't have to depend on the charity of the guests and certainly not accuse guests of "stealing"

And why must we pay a waiter extra fore doing his job?
He/she knew what the fee would be when they got hired.

I’m on several boards that concern vacation in the USA and many, many people think so about the tipping system.
As tourisme is booming this will only become a greater problem.

Fore the rest I was only speaking in general terms so sorry if I offended you.

I will say one thing, that is the way the system has worked for many many years. Now yes I knew I was only going to make 2.13 a hour plus tips when I was hired at IHOP 10 years ago. 99.99 percent of the population knows its customary to tip 15-20 percent of the bill when they receive good service. Now in this person's case, I as a server would not of said anything but just maybe she was not putting it toward them. Maybe they just felt guilty because they knew better, but hey that is another story and I told myself I would stay out of the debate. Its just so darn hard, I love it when people say servers are making thousands of dollars. I worked yesterday morning 6-3 and made 110.00, yep that was a GREAT day for me. I had decent tippers yesterday so it helps..Have a great day everyone, had to take today off to take my youngest to the dentist..

I supported my family by waiting tables when I was younger and knew what the wage was. I also knew the custom of tipping and worked very hard to provide good service to my customers. There are pros and cons to this system but the fact remains that in the USA tipping is customary.

Since tourism is booming trained wait staff will be in demand, especially at resort destinations. It is not unusual for these resorts to add a mandatory tip to their bills to ensure that their staff is compensated. My DS worked for two in So FL that did this, even for a glass of soda from a stand. I believe that if staff is not compensated more resorts will add a gratuity in, especially those that offer discount dining plans. Problem solved.

I forgot to mention I do tip the normal percentage.

In my country tips can be claimed as special payment ,so no sweat about that.
:rotfl2:
I only don't like to be forced into it with the saying :"if you don't tip you are stealing".
