we booked this for our fantasmic package and now getting worried. I am hearing terrible reviews and looking for some responses. we really like buffets because there is something for everyone. any opinions?

My DGF and I went to H&V for our Fantasmic package last year. While I personally enjoyed it, having neverending prime rib and good dessert variety among the other things that are available there, she thought it was just okay...and she had a stomach ache that night that lasted through the next day that she's pretty sure was due to something she ate there.

We are going again in a month and will be trying Mama Melrose this time!

I have only been there once for dinner. The choices were just ok, but 3 of the 4 in my party also did not feel well that night. I am not a fan, and it is on my never again list. (And I will usually try somewhere at least twice)

But everyone has a different experience and if it is somewhere you want to try, go for it! Let us know how you like it when you get back.

Moving from the review board to the main dining board for more feedback :thumbsup2

My family ate there in Feb. before a Fantasmic package- They had a wide variety of food, but it was all pretty tasteless and barely mediocre. I wouldn't make a point of going back:upsidedow

We've been twice because we couldn't get MM. Edible, but definitely won't be returning unless someone says eat here or die.

I have to agree with the others, I would not go back.

The food was fine, but it was a lame environment (for Disney).

If I were you, I would do Brown Derby (delicious but expensive, and 2 credits on DDP) or Mama Melrose. Mama Melrose was pretty good, not great either though.

This time we have decided not to book the Phantasmic package because (i) Mama Melrose was booked, and (ii) we didn't like H&V. So we are trying 50's Prime Time Cafe and then will just go 45 minutes early to the show to get a seat.

We used to do the FDP too but realized we really didn't need it and now we can just eat wherever we want.

Oh good, I am glad to hear that is has worked nicely for you. To be honest, we never got such great seats with the package anyway, so it feels good to be able to eat where and when we want.

My family enjoyed it. The buffet line was well-stocked and maintained. There wasn't anything I tried that was bad and some things were excellent. Everyone's expectations and tastes are different. We've gone to places that had lots of rave reviews and thought they didn't even come close to living up to the hype. I was nervous about going to H&V prior to our last trip and was ready to cancel, because of negative reviews. I'm glad we kept the ADR. Give it a try. You might be pleasantly surprised.

we also have fantasmic PRs for hollywood and vine on may 22 at 5:20......we have never been and I am leary about going after reading this thread but I won't cancel because we have never been and I am a firm believer in trying anything once...also, I want to get into fantasmic and with it being so near memorial weekend, don't want to chance a big crowd.......I will report back when we return from WDW on how the meal was.

We did not have the fantasmic package and did not even bother to go to fantasmic

BUT we did have dinner at Hollywood & Vine. It was excellent. I even got to try some things I had heard of from Food channel but had never tried before. DW & I enjoyed our meal there very much. Its a buffet with LOTS of choices. Surely everyone could find something they like.

If you've never done PrimeTime50s, you should select that instead. Not a buffet, but they have great 'home cooked type' selections -- and the wait-staff make it lots of fun!!

I was thinking of going there also on thanksgiving for ds's bday. so is brown derby have a better selection of food?:confused3 dh has enjoyed the buffet at both the CP and 1900 Park Fair so I assumed H&V was about the same..

we did fantasmic with mama melrose last time and wanted to try a buffet this time. i like buffets because i can get app, entree, desert all at one price. we have 2 days at dhs, so our other night will be at the 50's prime time cafe. we have 2 days booked at each park, but only one at animal kingdom.

Of course it depends what time of year you go, but we go in May, when it's moderate, and get a seat about 30 prior to showtime (like the suggested time if on the FDP) and have no problem getting seats. :thumbsup2

I've never been to H&V buffet, but as a rule I usually do buffets for breakfast as I find many of the Disney dinner buffets are so-so. There's really nothing much you can ruin for breakfast and there's always cereal, pasteries, yogurts that kind of stuff you can have at a breakfast buffet. Most buffet foods are usually the "cheaper" type of foods because people can eat in quantity and they have to keep their costs down. Breakfast foods are usually cheap to begin with.

To be honest, DH is my least favorite park for restaurants. Brown Derby is good - but expensive. I like Mama Melrose and would suggest that to you.
Prime Time 50's Cafe is fun and the desserts are decadent, but every time I go there it seems like the food looks better on the menu than it tastes. Could just be me. I haven't been to Sci-Fi in a long time so really can't comment.

Mama Melrose is all italian correct? that was my 1st choice since ds loves spaghetti but some of the reviews were mixed. I seriously do not think we havent eaten anywhere at MGM besides a character breakfast in all the years we have been going there.. ugh, decisions..

First of all, we love buffets too! We ate at H&V this past August and have to admit that it was our least favorite buffet of any in Disney. The service was slow and not friendly. The food was average. We also went there to get the Fantasmic pkg deal. If there is a way to switch to another TS I would suggest doing it.

Plus, the Fantasmic reserved area was NOT worth it...the seats were not that great. JMO

Hope you find something you like and that your family will enjoy!

I have a question. If I do not have a Fantasmic dining reservation, what will my chances be in getting into the show in Sept? I have all my ADR's made and this is not one. Should I change to this and if so what is the best place to eat. I have not eaten at H&V or Mama ?? (not sure on name exactely). Any help please :worship:

We've been there twice and it is only one of two Disney restaurants we will not go back to. We had terrible service both times--and the restaurant was not that crowded at the time we arrived. The food was lukewarm, they ran out and were slow to replenish and the place was not clean in our opinion.
