Another company who claim to specialise in travel insurance for pre-existing conditions and who might be worth contacting are Orbis Insurance on http://www.orbinsservs.moonfruit.com. I can't vouch for them personally but they seem to offer a lot of positives.

My DH had a health problem to declare when we went 2 years ago. For us, Atlas Direct were cheapest and offered the best cover of the companies I checked.

Thanks for all of your suggestions.
Have tried a couple today and they wouldn't insure us (our house insurance!), so it looks like it will have to be the post office
