Happy and healthy holiday to all those who celebrate!

Thursday night begins the Jewish holiday of the Festival of Weeks, or Shavuot. It celebrates the giving of the Law at Mount Sinai to Moses & the Jewish people. It's a 2 day holiday (except in Israel, were it is one day). I know this is one of the less practiced holidays, so just in case you want to learn more:

Of course for those that know Jewish holidays by their associated foods (Purim=hametaschen, Passover=matza, Chanukah=potato pancakes), this is the cheesecake holiday! Nothing like a great chocolate cheescake to make the day complete!

Yeah, I'm not too fond of dairy dishes. Can we go back to the holiday with the tzimmes? :rotfl:

Yay! Another food holiday! I learn so much from you Challer! Who doesn't love holidays and food, especially chocolate?!?

I remember as a small child giving family friends marshmallows on a Jewish holiday, but I can't remember which one! I used to love joining them on holidays, the food is always awesome!

Have a great holiday! :goodvibes

Oooooh. I never heard of that one. I love marshmallows. I need to find out which one that is. I'm up for any tradition that brings my blood sugar up!

My children took all my grapefruits and pears from the fridge this morning! My kindergartner and his class are walking to the shul down the street to deliver the fruits and veggies. Not sure what the 3rd graders are doing, but it will involve pears and grapefruits!

I'm not exactly sure what fruit, veggies and cheesecake have to do with the Torah, but what can ya do? :confused3

I do know that the school is donating everyting that isn't used ritually to the Cleveland Food Bank, so that's cool. :thumbsup2

Cute! They are probably doing something signifying that Shavuot was also the Festival of the First Fruits. The first crop of fruits (specifically seven types, icluding dates, grapes, pomegranite, etc.) were brought to the Temple in Jerusalem.

Cheesecake has nothing to do with it.

ok so i must have gained about 10 pounds....i LOVE dairy..
i made tons of yummy (if i do say so myself) food:
--4 cheese lasagna (this went over so well on thursday night, i had to make another one for friday lunch)
--sweet potato quiche
--eggplant quiche
--mushroom quiche
--onion quiche
--broccoli quiche
--cheese blintzes (they looked more like crepes actually)
--greek salad (mmmmmmm - my favorite)

and for dessert - 3 different kinds of cheese cake (and for the non-cheese cake guests - ben and jerry's ice cream - so rare to be able to serve REAL ice cream)...

too bad i don't have any food porn to share.....;)

Mmmmm...

Some of our highlights were:

- "rollitini" (eggplant wrapped around mozzarella)
- seared tuna with Cajun spices
- chocolate mint ice cream pie

Bring on the lactaid!

We'll pick up this food discussion in a few months. Rosh Hashana is just around the corner!
