Hilton Head - What's new

We are returning during the Christmas holiday week after a year absence. Last visit was in Dec 2000.

We always stopped into the HH outlet mall to visit the Disney Catalog store. I heard it wasn't there anymore.

What are a couple of good lower priced restaurants. I've been to the HH Diner. any other suggestions?

Are the programs any different? There were building tours to discuss landscaping and the construction. Still there?

Campfires?

Looking for new ideas for activities. We are bringing some friends this time. so we'll have kids 13,12,11,4,1.

I'm not much on activities but I can suggest a few inexpensive places to eat. First is Dune's Pizza. It is one of the best I've ever had. It's located almost straight across from the HH diner and the exit from Shelter Cove. It's in the gray cedar section in the second row right next to Charlie's and Sante Fe Restaurants. Another place is Wild Wings on Pope Ave in fron of the Bi-Lo. The Old Oyster Factory is a reasonable seafood place that's family oriented, not cheap but OK. Last I heard there was a 10% DVC discount and they've let me use the free salad and 10% discount combined. Guissepi's Pizza also reported as good but I can't say personally.

My DW and I will be arriving at HH on the 29th. We love Wild Wings and a restaraunt called the Big Bamboo. They have a chili dog there called the "War Dog" that is really good.

A number of places including the Big Bamboo have early bird specials. I thought about listing that place but felt the food was mediocre. It's like being in MASH or Korean War with the way it's set up.

The Disney catalog outlet is no longer at the outlet mall, but there is now a Character Connection there, with merchandise from the parks.

The "Behind the Ears" tour of the resort property is still being offered. It's usually on Wednesday morning, though, so I don't know if it will be a different day or skipped during Christmas and New Year's weeks.

One new activity is the Hilton Head Island tour. It's $20 per person, but I found it really interesting -- for an adult -- I doubt it would be worth it for most kids.

Most of the other activites are still the same -- still have the kids' crafts (including Gyotaku -- dead fish t-shirts, LOL!) and Goofy Bingo. I think campfires are twice a week.

As far as restaurants, if you like seafood, a good family-type seafood restaurant is Hudson's. Captain's Seafood and the Sea Shack are also great for seafood, but both are very informal (i.e., look like a dive, but the food is GREAT). Make sure you get a copy of the restaurant guide that has all the menus in it; they usually have it at the front desk when you check in.
