I'd like to check out the HHI resort. We are out of points for the near future, and I was wondering if it would be better to pay cash (perhaps with a DVC member discount) or rent points for our stay.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Cash rates at HHI are surprisingly reasonable. In fact, when we booked a cash night back in April 2013, we paid about $250 for a 2BR on a weekend night. That night would have cost MORE via a point rental. If you are planning on staying any weekend nights, the point requirement is almost double that of the weeknights. I would run the numbers and consider renting points ONLY for weeknights and just paying cash for weekends.

We got a great Visa card rate for a Halloween weekend stay a few years ago,

Beware, we now own 142 HHI points that we regularly use at HHI!

we went to HHI this last halloween and Loved It!!! I would be ok going back every year but we also want to try Vero, A cruise, Hawaii...

HHI has great cash rates, but only certain times of year. Again, beware that after staying there once, we became owners.

As others have said, good to run the math. The Disney timeshare can be reasonable as it is not OceanFront.

Marriott Harbour Point and Marriott Sunset Pointe at Shelter Cove are also nearby (All three afront Broad Creek)

Yup, we spent about $85 for one night in a studio. We'd been looking around for a hotel before our DHHIR stay in a 1 BR. We were very pleasantly surprised to learn it was cheaper to just stay there.

The availability is different for cash rooms vs points so depending on when you want to go that may factor in. The week we are going in April is booked up for points but we were able to get a DVC cash discount of around 25% off rack rate no problem. It came out much cheaper than renting points since weekends cost so many points there and cash rate was the same for all nights.
