HI! We (hubby and I) are planning a road trip from Dallas to Hilton Head, departing on Christmas Eve. We are taking the scenic tour through Tennessee which we realize is much longer than the suggested route. We arrive in Hilton Head on Sunday, December 28 for five nights. This will be our very first visit and we are excited to ring in the new year there. I have questions regarding what to expect around that time of year.

1. Will most restaurants be open that week?

2. Are there dolphin tours during this time period?

3. What about renting bikes, how much, appropriate for this time
of year?

4. Any "must do's"?

A lot of your questions really depend on the weather that week.

Most restaurants will still be open; some will have shorter hours, and some will be closed for the season. There are so many restaurant options on the island, however, that you should have no trouble at all finding great places to eat.

The dolphin tours will be offered, subject to weather.

Bikes will be available, and they're approrpriate as long as you feel comfortable with the weather. I know that during the off-season the length-of-stay rental is usually less than during the high season, but I don't know for sure what it will be.

Must dos include taking part in some of the resort activities. There are many offered for adults and families -- the member "Behind the Ears" tour is great, especially for a first-timer. If Chef Gordon is offering any of his programs, they're always great. (Are you interested in booking A Private Affair while you're there?)

You can also check out other things on the island. There are historical sites, the Coastal Discovery Museum, Harbourtown, lots of shopping. More than you could ever fit into a five-night stay!

We were there at that time last year. The weather was cool, but jackets/sweatshirts were all we really needed. I did notice after Jan. 1st, several of the restaurants over in Shelter Cove were closed for the winter. Not all, but several. If I remember right, it seemed as though they were closed through mid March or so. There are so many great places to eat, you won't go hungry, but you might want to call before you go to make sure they are open. We rented bikes and enjoyed riding. There was only one day that I thought we were nuts for riding, and that was the day we were leaving. They did run a special rental rate for the length of stay for the bikes. It seems like it was a pretty good deal. We're headed there in about 10 days and can't wait!
