Anybody know of a good place to buy Hill's Prescription Diet L/D? PetSmart said that you could only get it through a vet. Our 12 year old beagle is having liver problems, and in addition to medication, our vet recommended this food for her liver. The only problem is that it's about $45 for a bag (20 or 25 lbs - can't remember which). Our beagle and chihuahua eat together, so they're both eating it (vet says that's fine).

I'd love to find somewhere else to get it cheaper (particularly since the prescription is about $80 a month too).

Thanks!

It's called Prescription Diet because you have to have a prescription to get it. PetSmart is the only place besides a vet's office where I've ever seen it and I assume that's because they have a vet's office located in the store. Are you even sure it would be cheaper to buy it there? If it is your vet should give you a prescription. Unless PetSmart requires that you go through one of their vets.

I bought PD through my vet for a cat for over 10 years at $23 per 10lb bag. Unfortunately it's just more expensive food but it kept him healthy so it was worth it to me.

Did you check with your vet for coupons? Sometimes mine has them. When Toby was sick with tummy trouble he was on the canned version of the L/D and the vet had coupons. Plus, I think I got some from the Hill's website. I've also seen coupons on occasion in the Sunday paper.

You may want to do some internet research. One of my dogs has allergies and she was on Z/D diet becuase it was a single source of protien. I looked around, checked out ingredients, finally found someone in my area that sells holistic dog foods and I was able to find several alternatives that were much much cheaper and better for her to boot.

GL!

I do realize that it's Prescription Diet and what that means, but you usually have to buy Frontline at the vet's office too, and I've been buying it elsewhere for the last couple of years (at a much cheaper price). :teeth:

While I don't know that the food would be cheaper anywhere else, I'm hoping that I can find it for a better price.

While she and her health are very important to me, she's one of 4 dogs and 12 cats that I support, so I try to find as economical a method as possible to take care of everybody. All of the pets I have were abandoned and/or abused. Since coming to me, everyone's been spayed or neutered.

Thanks for the suggestion about the coupons. I will definitely check on that!

I will also check out your suggestions concerning the ingredients. That sounds like a possible alternative!

Thanks for the help!

We had a pug with a congential liver shunt and had to have L/D for 3 years before the disease took her life. We also have another dog and there was NO way I could seperate their food so both dogs were eating the stuff. Since I had spent a fortune ( could have had 5 purebreeds for what that pug cost us - but oh how we loved her ) at the vets keeping her alive, he took pity on us and told us if we bought 6 cases at a time he could give us a 25% discount on the food. We would buy cans feed them in the morning but also had the dry L/D in a bowl for them to eat when they were hungry. The dry is cheaper than the canned food but I would have felt bad just giving them dry food since the pug couldn't eat any table food at all.

I searched everywhere for cheaper L/D but had never found it. I wish I could give you some great website in Canada where you could purchase it but I know I never found one.

I completely sympathize with you, my thoughts are with you.

Thanks, I appreciate the thoughts. We wouldn't be able to keep the Beagle's and Chihuahua's food separate either. I was really glad when the vet said that it wouldn't hurt for them to share. Fortunately, they've always eaten dry food, so the transition was easy.

The Beagle has been through cancer several years ago. Right now, she's retainnig a lot of fluid (and is on a fluid pill for that).

She's also waking up more at night to go out. In fact, Friday night, she came and got me up 3 times (we say she whispers - comes to the side of the bed and very quietly says "booff"). The 3rd time the Chihuahua picked up his head and growled at her (in other words, "Would you please go lay back down and let me get some sleep?" :rotfl: ).

We talked to the vet about her being so restless at night. DH recently started taking Melatonin for his sleeping problems and suggested I try it on the dog. I called the vet, and he said it wouldn't hurt to try. So far (the last two nights), it's been helping (made it to 5:30 this morning). :teeth:
