Thanks for thinking of him.
Sadly he had a fall yesterday. His wife was moving him to the toilet and his legs just buckled underneath him. His legs were weak, but he could still stand on them as long as he had someone holding him for added support.
Anyway, he fell, even though his wife was holding on to him and the way he landed his wife could not get him up without help, so they had to call a neighbor to help him back up. (I live about 2.5 to 3 hours away from them)

He's OK, but nothing like your neighbor seeing you semi naked to make you lose just a little more of your dignity

Anyway, didn't mean to make a long post about it. Just didn't have a good day yesterday. Just the daily roller coaster when living with ALS

Sorry to hear that...it is so hard when our parents dont do well. We expect them to be with us forever. My Dh and I had my MOM years ago live with us till she passed(she was only 62)...and my Dad who had many health problems also lived with us. He has also passed. Being a nurse they came to live with me. I am glad he has someone with him. How old is your dad if you dont mind me asking?

Yes, it is hard. This is my first time dealing with an illness with my parents. My mom is still healthy
My dad is 51 years old so this disease came out of the blue because he has always been healthy and kept himself fit by biking and walking and eating good.

I just wish I lived closer to my dad. It is hard being about 3 hours away (one way)
I am an only child so I wish I could be there for him more.

Not easy is it DISUNC...taking care of our parents. It took awhile but my dad got use to me changing his diapers and bathing him and such. I think it made it a little easier him knowing that i was a nurse. Longer story with my Mom. They were divorced so they lived with us at different times. Your parents are lucky to have you. Dad was bedridden also. No matter how hard we tryed to get him up moving he would not so the saying goes if you dont use it(your muscles)you loose it.Dad could not go on any kind of medi-cal till all was spent. all his savings, selling the house, everything...than he got medi-sal 3 years after. His meds cost him $1600 a month....many times i went into Mexico and got them for a fraction of the cost. When it come to the elderly ......the system runs short...mostly with meds since many are not covered by Medicare.

Jacksonsmom your Dad is so young...that even makes it harder. And dont be to hard on yourself for being 3 hrs away....he is not alone and he may also not want you to see him this way. He knows you love him and that you are there when he needs you.

And you are right being an only child makes it very hard. Even though my whole family lives in florida and both my parents were flown to me from florida so we could care for them. I at least had siblings to talk with about what we were going throuhg. They were not close enough to help but they were there to talk to. We are here to talk with if you need us

Here goes:

1. Yes. I do believe that the Senator's statement effectively legitimized the notion/fear that Obama's life is at risk. Before now, that notion was only uttered at kitchen tables or whispered at Starbucks. Nobody (I hope) really wanted to believe that Obama's life was really at risk---and people self-protected by chalking that notion up to paranoia. But Senator Clinton's remark instantly made it a plausible scenario. No longer is it paranoia---Obama's own running mate acknowledges the danger he could be in. On TV. She doesn't have to explicitly say "Obama could be assassinated" in order for that to be her core intent of message.

2. Regarding Reverend Wright. I have only listened to one of the two controversial sermons in it's entirety (the one from which the "chickens coming home to roost" quote was pulled). So that's the only one I'm qualified to comment on. That sermon is not at all vitriolic and that quote is not his own---he pulled it from (and attributed it to) an interview with a US Ambassador. The theme/message of that particular sermon is "self-examination". And taking appropriate action. And personal responsibility. Though a bit raucous for my own personal tastes (and considering that I'm not particularly religious), I found the sermon inspiring and thought-provoking. Having grown up in and around the Black Church and on the South Side of Chicago, I have a great respect for the Black Christian tradition. And for the good Rev. Wright did and does in my (former) community. However. At the end of the day, I know this much to be true--- no matter for whom I choose to vote...I'm not voting for Reverend Wright.

Thank you for speaking truth, and defending your position on Rev. Wright. I think that there is an immediate defensiveness that emerges when people hear his sermon. I too was defensive until I realized he was referring Polk's response on Hannity and Combs. I then listened to the entire sermon

This type of spin is the spin that I complain about. Pray on the minds of the ignorant, and further divide this country by race.

You know, I am in a VERY racist part of America, and I decided to see how many people would vote for Obama. I went to my co-workers and questioned them. Those who had "friends" who were African American did not see the Rev. Wright surmons as controversial as those who were 45 and over, and/or did not have relationships with African Americans.

With my dad's breathing being so bad we don't want anyone with any virus/colds around him. If he catches even a slight cold, he probably won't be able to fight it off and he will die, so we played it safe and didn't visit him this weekend.
Hopefully by next weekend my cold will be gone and we can get up there.

This is with my mom too. With her exacerbation COPD, if the kids have even a slight cough, they can't go anywhere near her room. I'm using disinfectant stuff on the door knobs and everything I touch at that point.
She had 2 pretty bad breathing spells yesterday, so I had to stay indoors and listen for her. She coudln't breathe and was sweating pretty bad. Her back gives out too now, so she wants to hold her breath when her back hurts and that hurts her breathing, so it's a vicious circle.

I look at my neighbors who can come and go as they please and I feel jealousy. I know I would have it no other way, but I wish she wasn't so against going to the Dr. That's another hurdle I have to get over. I always think in my mind, this would be so much better if she was normal and would have went to the dr., so it wouldn't get to this stage so fast.

I agree DISUNC! to all the caregivers who give themselves for their loved ones.

Just for the record, I wanted to say that I think Hillary's comments, while incredibly stupid and poorly phrased, were not intended to suggest the possibility of assassination. She was trying to point out that the race in '68 was still going on in June, and I think that's all she was trying to point out. Unfortunately, she chose to phrase her comments in such a way as to bring up the notion of assassination, so her comments were mistook by many to mean something I honestly think she had no intention of suggesting.

It was a dumb mistake, there is no question about that. But I honestly don't think that she intended to inject the idea of assassination into the conversation. She just screwed up and should have used some other example to make her case.

I just wanted to post some good wishes for those who are going through such rough times right now with the health of their loved ones. I know how hard it can be as well. My father died of bone cancer when I was twelve, my mother of kidney failure when I was thirteen and I lost my only brother six years ago also to kidney problems. It is so hard to watch those you love so much suffer. It is a very helpless feeling. I know I differ with you guys on politics, but my heart sincerely goes out to all that are dealing with health problems of loved ones. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
