Thanks! I think it was a very powerful sermon and like MyManGoofy!! I would think it even more powerful if I believed in god. I never had a problem with Wright's "God Damn America" statement before. If God can "bless" American than he can "damn" it too IMO.

I guess I am the only one who found the sermon offensive. I don't think it was powerful at all. I think it was full of half truths and lies and outright America bashing (and not in any constructive manner either). America is putting whom in jails and giving them drugs? What is this man even talking about? Sorry, if this hysterical ranting is what Obama favors as spiritual leadership and moral compass, I agree with KikiFan, he is not the man I want in the oval office.

I read the sermon, and saw a sermon that was filled with hate mongering. The Bible is so ridiculously contradictory, you can find justification for any position.

As far as being a Constitutional Scholar, our constitution has a lot of wiggle room as far as interpretation, hence the need for a Supreme Court.

It's pretty clear that he's talking about institutionalized racism. Unfortunately, it's live and well in the city of Chicago and in the United States.

I promised myself I wouldn't post to this thread anymore, but....There is a thread floating around in which CathrynRose posted the entire sermon that "G-D America" was taken from. I would really encourage everyone to go and read that sermon, as the quoted part isn't reflective of the message that the sermon gives. I'm not defending Wright's use of that phrase, as I think it was wrong to do that in that setting. But please...go read it for yourself before you judge it, because it is much different in context than when played as a solitary clip.

read it and it still disgust me. It is FULL of hate! I just can not wrap my head WHY some people think that is OK? I know if Hillary's pastor/preacher said even half that stuff these boards would be on fire because people would be up in arms.

It is all really OK because Rev. Wright is black? I just don't understand. :confused3

I am not a racist. I treat and look at every one the same. I don't judge by the color of skin but the person. I am met people that are black who I don't want to be around because they are jerks and I have met white people who I don't want to be around because they are jerks too. It doesn't matter to me. If you are jerk or a rude or hateful person I don't want to be around you. The person can be polka dots or zebra stripes, I could care less.

In that same breathe I don't give other races a "pass" to be hateful or to say some racist things to/about other races. I don't care if a person is black, white, red or purple...if they say something racist I will call them on it and there is NO EXCUSE! I am sorry your great grandparents were treated so badly, but you know what it over! It was a sad point in History but it is DONE!

Don't you think MY ancestors were treated harshly? Women were second class citizens for a looooong time. I don't use that excuse to mouth out sexism or racism.

I just don't get it :confused3

I am sure racism is alive and well. I certainly would not have a problem with a sermon against racism in America. However, that is not what I read from this sermon. It is an irrational and inflammatory rant with no logic to it at all. None of it is clear to me other than the bashing. That's crystal clear.

I understand where you are coming from and I do share your concerns. The thing is, for some of us it's not just us "being in a snit because our fav didn't get the nom,"

I realize that you like Obama but some of us don't. And when I say we don't like him, I don't mean hold your nose and vote variety. I mean we flat out think he would be a danger to this country. So how do we reconcile that? I think McCain is a danger, I think Obama is a danger.

And for the record I've donated enough of my time and money to the DNC I'm comfortable in my status as a Dem.

ITA!

This is the first time I have ever thought about voting against a Democrat. I have been voting for over 18 years and never, ever once voted off the Democrat ticket in any election, even local ones.

Sometimes I did not 100% like the candidate (John Kerry comes to mind) but I did hold my nose and voted for him.

Obama is different to me. I do think he is a danger to our Country. I can not in good faith vote for a man that I worry about. It has nothing to do with Hillary not winning the nom. Obama totally rubs me the wrong way. I worry what he will put this Country through! I can not put my finger on it exactly why I feel he is a danger, but call it intuition, but something in my gut is telling me this man will not make a good President. I think Obama hides behind a mask. He likes to pretend he is different and even better then all the other politicians, but he is as sneaky and slick as every other one (yes, even Hillary --- I know she isn't perfect but she isn't pretending to be)

Obama always seems to have the perfect speeches, the perfect answers and the perfect excuses. He really scares me as our leader.

That is why if he gets the nom, I don't know what I will do. I can not vote for McCain (he scares me too) and I can not vote for Obama.
I will not sit out a vote, besides I want to see our Rep. senator out of office!
I will either leave the President ticket blank or I will write in someone else.

If that makes me a "bad" Democrat then I guess I will be that "bad" Democrat, because no one will guilt me into voting for someone I can not trust AT ALL!

Here's the thing ... we white folks try our best to be color blind. We are good people have been told again and again that we should not judge on the color of someone's skin. So, we all put our monochromatic glasses on to view the world and we pat ourselves on the back for not being prejudiced. As jacksonsmom said: "The person can be polka dots or zebra stripes, I could care less. " The problem is that we cannot understand the experiences of Black America unless we take our glasses off and try to see things through the eyes of those Americans. Reverend Wright's sermon gives you that opportunity, but you need to remove your glasses to be able to read it.

No, sorry. I will not. I was so happy at the beginning of this primary season because all the Dem candidates were winners and I would be proud to vote for any of them (I favored Richardson). You can go read my earlier posts on the matter. I saw Obama as a man who happened to be black and that did not matter to me one bit. Now it seems that he does not see himself as a man who happens to be black, but as a "black man" in quotation marks with all the loaded reverse-racist garbage that entails. As a result, in all likelihood I will not vote for him.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar and sometimes a racist is a racist.

What did the State of Israel do to the black community in Wright's lifetime?

I have witness racism first hand. I have been treated differently when I am out walking with my uncle, who happens to be black.
I see the way people look at him and even treat him. It is wrong, I will not agrue that and I will not agrue that racism is alive and well in the good ol' USA.

But I do not feel that gives other races the right to be racist to other races. Blaming other races and making excuses why most prisons have black males just leads to more hate and prejudice! As long as people are blaming others or using excuses it will always be "us vs. them" :sad2:

I think the Country would be a much better off if all races listened to the words of Bill Cosby on racism and race issues then people like Rev. Wright or Jesse Jackson.

I don't believe or agree with everything that Rev. Wright says. To begin with, I'm an atheist! Obviously I am not threatened by Rev. Wright's perceived racism and as I white person I think he speaks the truth about people in power. Like I said if a God can bless then a God can damn and in that case I stand by the statement: "God Damn America for treating her citizens as less than human."

FWIW, we celebrate diversity in our family. People are people, but it's cool that the kid across the street's dad is African and the kid down the block has two moms and that the mom of another kid my my DD's class is Ho Chunk.

How is that any different from what I am saying?

I don't care that my son has friends that have a different skin color then him and I don't care that one of his teachers is in a same sex relationship. It doesn't bother me none. It's all good. Like I said I judge a person by their actions and such, not by the color of their skin or who they love.

I think we both are saying the same thing.

I applaud you, but Rev. Wright does not agree with you, at least not where it concerns Italians or Jews.

I think we are saying just about the same thing about how we're raising our kids :). I guess what I'm saying is that while I know my "reality" as a straight white person but I can still understand the "reality" of those who have been oppressed.

Hey! I've even cool with Italians and Jews :lmao:. {Just trying to interject some humor into a serious subject}

I found it offensive, too.

That sermon doesn't belong in a church. It is full of hate and Christianity is about love. And it's not okay just because he's black. I know racism is alive and well. That doesn't make two wrongs a right. Much progress has been made. We need to keep moving in a positive direction and the things he says keep people mired in the past. Hate breeds hate.

It is an irrational and inflammatory rant with no logic to it at all. None of it is clear to me other than the bashing. That's crystal clear.

It's hard to follow the message for all the ranting and hate.

The problem is that we cannot understand the experiences of Black America unless we take our glasses off and try to see things through the eyes of those Americans. Reverend Wright's sermon gives you that opportunity, but you need to remove your glasses to be able to read it.

I understand that people who have been hurt see things differently. That is normal. But to let hate fester and grow inside of you is not helpful. Many of the people in "white America" can see that racism is wrong and deplore what happened in the US. Can the sins of our fathers never be forgiven? Will it always be on our heads when we weren't even alive? Things are better. Sermons like that one get a whole new generation angry about the past. We need to move forward.

I know. That's easier for me to say. I'm white. But I'm being realistic. There is nothing we can do to make it all better. We have to just keep trying and loving each other. I pray that the day will come when we don't see each other by color...but by what's inside.

I have witness racism first hand. ...But I do not feel that gives other races the right to be racist to other races.

My feelings exactly. We need to stand up against racism when we see it. But it's not really acceptable to mention it if it's a black man being racist towards whites. That's a double standard.

It is a serious subject and it really bothers me a lot, not least because I may actually have to hold my nose and vote for a republican (of course DH would kick me out and divorce me in that case so I have to think VERY carefully). ;)

I know that you mean, LOL. My husband looked at me like I grew a second head when I told him voted for Hillary. I had been an Obama for president supporter before Obama even announced!

I really liked Obama after his convention speech. I thought he was brilliant. This wright thing is really upsetting me.

I really do respect your concern because I think it comes from a good place, although I admit I don't quite understand it. None of the recent scandals have really upset me ... I try to ignore them because diggin' up and dishin' dirt is all part of politics.

I think that the pastors who have supported McCain are even bigger nutjobs than Wright. If McCain is elected, they have a far better chance to influence our government than Wright would if Obama is elected. McCain is going to have to promise something to the religious right to get them to come out and vote for him and I shudder to think what that might be.
