Hiking-style backpack at WDW?

My DH wants to bring a hard-framed hiking backpack, so he can keep his camera bag, and whatever else in it, plus some water bottles and snacks, etc. I will have an ECV so it wouldn't have to be carried most of the time. I guess that he is planning on leaving it strapped to the ECV while we are on rides, and maybe just remove the camera bag to bring on with us?

This is not it, but similar style. http://www.cabelas.com/product/High...&WT.mc_id=BingPLA&WT.z_mc_id1=03226986&rid=20 I am concerned that it is going to be a pain to get through security (any tips on that if he DOES bring it?) or if it is even allowed in the park. What are your thoughts??

Yikes that thing is big. I would try to discourage him. First of all you won't be able to leave it on the ECV when you get to bag check, it will have to be removed and placed on the table. Second, every bag within a bag will have to be removed and contents examined. Then all those zippered compartments. This is going to be a real time killer, pain in the you know where. I would persuade him to go with the camera bag in addition to something smaller for the days essentials.

I agree that it is too big. No way you could take that on rides. And leaving it unattended on your ECV? I doubt it would be there when you got back. A smaller day pack would be much more practical.

:confused3
I really don't see the need for something that big in the parks. And it doesn't matter if it's impractical - he won't be allowed to bring it in.

NOT ALLOWED:
"Suitcases, coolers or backpacks with or without wheels larger than 24" (61 cm) long x 15" (38 cm) wide x 18" (46 cm) high. Coolers required for medication may be stored in a locker or at Guest Relations."

That bag is way too big.

Everyone here has pointed out how difficult carrying that around would be. I'm thinking it will also be rather annoying to other guests in a crowded park.

Something tells me someone is going to get knocked over by that thing while standing in a line.

My heavens, that is something I could use for a weekend suitcase.

I'd suggest to your husband to realistically think about the items you want with you. Camera bag I understand. A bottle of water is nice, but it gets warm. We just get free ice water at counter service places (you can add packets of something like Crystal Light to make it taste better).

I don't know what else you'd really need to fill a bag; I find a small or medium purse is ample. I do take a light sweater that I can shove into my purse when it's hot. And a tiny travel umbrella if rain is forecast.

I agree its too big. BUT - when we went to WDW a few weeks ago, I was absolutely amazed at what people lug around with them. We saw plenty of rolling duffles and backpacks (although not as big as that one) stuffed to the max. I even saw a man with a rolling suitcase that must have been 40" tall PLUS he was wearing a backpack. What the heck are these people taking with them to the parks??

Actually most Hikers would use this for a week long trip with all their gear including shelter, food and a way to cook it. :scared1:

We used to carry 2 small backpacks from Wal Mart. Last trip one of those packs was no longer around so I started to carry a Camel Back type pack just without the bladder. Its great it fit tight to the body and is narrow so less likely to hit someone. Its very similar to a biking backpack like this. In the summer we also had an igloo max cool cooler backpack.

I but I too have seen all kinds of illegal pull behind too large items at WDW. The oddest being a hardside carry on suitcase.

Way too big and impractical, as well as a target for thieves. Tell him if he wants to take that huge of a backpack, *he* is in charge of carrying it.

My thought is that it's way too big to be practical.

I concur. It is so big that he may actually have issues bringing it in. Such a design is intended to also carry a sleeping bag, clothing, and tent as well.

You need a hiking DAY pack, which is smaller, if he wants the hiking pack function.

Getting the thing on rides WILL be a problem. And lockers that do exist won't accommodate it.

And while ECV's have baskets--that pack is oversized for them.

Too cumbersome as well as too big. What is the world does he think he's going to need.

I never carry more than a small crossbody bag. I get free ice water at CS places (no need to lug heavy warm bottles around).

Camera bag and a small string sack for other essentials will be enough.

A MUCH smaller bag will carry all those essentials he is wanting to bring into the parks.

At DL last year I used an LL Bean bag. It was plenty big enough to replace my camera bag and had water bottle pockets on each end.

The gigantic bag is overkill!

Well, he has been convinced. WHEW! He was not planning to bring it every day, but I guess mainly on days when he is bringing a lot more camera equipment for various lenses, the tripod, plus sweatshirts for 5 people? I don't know. I do find it ironic that he was so, so adamant that this not be a "pack mule" trip like we used to do at DL. Now, to be fair, we had PAP's, and lived 20 minutes away, and had small children at the time. I frequently had a double stroller, or sit & stand, or at MINIMUM a single stroller, so it wasn't like we were CARRYING stuff all of the time, I just didn't want to pay for bottled water and food if I could bring it in, plus little kids need LOTS OF CRAP, lol. AND I had the security line down to a science, bc I packed everything in those mesh bags (sort of like these http://www.ebags.com/product/travelon/set-of-7-packing-mesh-envelopes/17167), so I would pull the stroller up, pull out and plop down a bunch of mesh bags where they could see all of the contents, unzip my one soft-sided cooler, and be back on my way before most people who only had even a small purse. Totally different situation, right?

Anyway, he is now buying a bigger, backpack-style (but way smaller than the hiking backpack) camera bag. That IS the compromise, so I guess that if there is an issue he will have to deal with it, but I still think that it is going to be a huge pain. But whatcha gonna do, right?? :confused3:confused3:confused3

That seems really excessive. Like, a lot.

Then again, our family has learned the art of going bagless.

Haha! I used to carry 4 or 5 days of "stuff" with me in smaller packs than that - tent, food, cloths, gear, etc!

Glad he backed down!

That is way too big to be very practical. I'd suggest that he get something else.

I use a regular school backpack with my camera bag in it to protect the camera. It can be taken on rides no problem so you wouldn't have a lose camera banging around.

I just saw he changed his mind. Phew - a smaller bag will be much better for you all.
