High Speed Internet at Swan

I was reading on Starwoods website that the $10 resort fee includes High-Speed Internet. Does anyone know anything about this? Is it a hook-up for your laptop? Is it a terminal in a lounge? Does anyone have any details?

Ho. We always use our laptop at the Swan. The hook up is at your desk in your room. I did not think it was very high speed(we have Road Runner) but that was last year. We used it every day and we were careful not to go over an hour. We did use our own internet service by getting the dial-up number before our trip. Hope this info helps.

Both the dolphin and the swan now have high speed internet access in the rooms. I just plugged the cable into my network port/card and it was good to go. There are directions on the cable and a number to call if you have trouble. It was very fast and a great bonus to be able to check my email and report my days events to the disboards.

Yes, there is high speed internet at the Dolphin also.

You need a network interface card for you laptop in order to use it....otherwise you just use the regular phone line.

OK, this may be a dumb question, but I am not very computer savvy. Do you need a dial-up number to log on to the internet at the Dolphin? We have a cable modem at home, so I don't know much about dial-up.

Webray's comments confused me (not hard to do). So if I don't have a network interface card on my laptop, can I still log on to the internet using the phone line if I have a local dialup number? How do I know if I have on interface card??

If you can hook up your laptop at home to the cable modem then you will have no problems at the hotel. Check the holes on the side of your laptop if you are not sure. You should have a regular phone jack and then another hole that looks similar to a phone jack only slightly bigger. Just plug the network cable on the desk into the larger looking phone jack on your laptop. Open up internet explorer as usual and you will be surfing the web. If you use "Outlook Express" as your regular email program at home you won't be able to use it from the hotel. You will need to go to the web mail system for your provider and read and respond to email there. If this doesn't make sense email me and we dan discuss further.

If your cable provider has dialup service you can use the regular telephone line and dialup to check email and surf the web. It will be much slower than what you are used to if you have a cable/high speed internet at home. If you decide to use dial up on vacation try using it from home to make sure you understand how to use it.

and I brought my Laptop. I tried the high speed connection, and it failed to work. I have a year old Dell, and I hooked it into that larger connection on the laptop, but, it did not work. I do not have high speed at home, so I think that there must be another part that needs to be purchased in order to run high speed. My lap top ran fine with the regular hook up, just no high speed. I suppose I need another part.

you don't need another part. To use the high speed internet in the room you also may want to check these settings.
Open Internet explorer,
click on tools
click on internet options
click on the connections tab
click LAN Settings
verify that the use a proxy server box is unchecked and the dial whenever a network connection radio button is selected

I know this doesn't help you now but it may in the future.

So basically, if I have the slot in my computer to hook up to the high speed connection, then I am ready to go? I just plug it in and internet explorer works? If I have a hotmail account, I can just use that?

If I don't have the slot but I have a local dialup number, I can dial up, log on to the server (or whatever its called) and then open up internet explorer? It will just be slower?

Also, I followed the directions in the above post to check my connection. The three radio buttons that I have say
1. Never dial a connection
2. Dial whenever a network connection IS NOT PRESENT
3. Always dial my default connection

Is the second one the one that should be clicked???

yes just make sure your setting are correct like I explained above. also some hotels charge for using their high speed lines so when you first open IE a screen will pop up asking for billing information. A standard charge is around $9.95 a day. This is a small price to pay for those of us who must work from a hotel during vacation. I can transfer and download file much faster using a high speed line which gets me on my merry way faster

you will be able to check hotmail by going directly to www.hotmail.com

you can still check your mail provided by your high speed internet service provider you will just need to go their webpage and check it from their. For instance when I am at home I check my ISP mail by using "Outlook Express" but when a hotel using an alternate ISP I need to go to my home ISP's web page example www.yourhomeisp.com

Many local high speed provider do not provide a dial up service, and if they do they charge you by the minute that you use it so be careful about using a dial-up number provided by your ISP if you regularly use a high speed connection.
