High school graduation "shower"

Wow....that's out of control.

What's next? Kindergarten showers?

:lmao:
Please, let's start this one. My DD starts Kindergarten in one week. Do you think it is too late for me to get one together? There are still a few things on her "list" I haven't gotten yet. :thumbsup2

I have just got a new job. You are all invited to my "New Job Shower."

Since I need a new wardrobe, please come and shower me with gifts and good wishes!

I am registered at Ann Taylor, Banana Republic and Bloomingdales

Regrets only!

I'm not coming...sorry. Whatever day you're having the party, I'm having my carpets shampooed. Cause I'm moving out of my apartment into our house. My house warming will be the following week. I've registered at Peir 1, Bed Bath and Beyond, and Linens N Things.

This is tacky, regardless of whether there was a graduation party or not. IF there was a party, I'm sure relatives brought gifts/checks. If there wasn't a party, it's a pretty sure bet that everyone knew XXX was graduating and if they wanted to acknowledge it, they sent a present/check even without a party. So what's up with the "decorate my dorm room" gift grab? Sure, an invitation to a going away party/BBQ is one thing, but sending invitations to a shower with a gift registry??? Gimme a break! No wonder so many of today's young people feel entitled; their parents are teaching them that they are!

Did they ask for help with the tution too? ;)

It sounds as if they just did ask for help with the tuition since they already had a graduation party prior to this gift grab.;)

:lmao: :rotfl2: :lmao:

Yes I fully plan on declining.
First, she had a really nice party the night of the actual graduation. Which we gave an extremely nice gift.
Next, I'm still a bit peeved because she needed $475.00 Manolos to graduate in.
lastly, they didn't even bother to put what college this child will be attending, just an invitation to bring a gift.

As a side note: I went to college in the 70's (University of Pittsburgh  ), we were lucky if we had a wash clothe that matched a towel. When did a dorm room start to look like a Pottery barn catalogue cover.
I'll say it again, no wonder these young ladies graduate with no idea of the word "budget"

Wow! Do I feel stupid for encouraging you to attend! I totally missed this follow-up response from you and it sheds a different light on things!!! She already had a graduation party and you already brought an extremely nice gift? I don't think so! I was assuming that maybe you had sent a card but there hadn't been a party yet. Oh, dear! What kind of monster are they trying to create? That is beyond ridiculous!!! DECLINE!

I think you are right, some of these kids graduate college, and have no clue what the real world is like.

I work for a company that has a "college trainee" program. These kids come into a nice job, full time w/great benefits - they are dressed in expensive shoes, and still have daddys credit card to pay their bills. They go out every night to dinner and drinks and spend like $100 a night. They have no clue - how that life style will catch up with them.

Give her a bar of Irish Spring deodorant soap - this "shower" idea stinks to high heaven!

Congrats on showing your backbone to her nauseating parents by declining to play along - this girl will clearly be attending the "College of So, What Are You Going to Do for Me?"

Get busy planning your social calendar for the next few years - I have a funny feeling you'll need to be unavailable for countless other such fascinating "events" (otherwise known as "Gifting Opportunities brought to you by Target and Bed, Bath, and Beyond") in this kid's life...

Yep, decline. A nice dinner night, now an open house? And in Manolos to boot? Whatever. I hated having a baby shower cause I felt like I was begging for gifts. I know they're happy for their daughter, but this is just teaching entitlement. These kids need to learn about gratitude.

Here's a thought, may be we could all throw our own "going to Walt Disney World" shower! We can go to Target and register for toiletries, batteries, a few clothing items, luggage, etc...Just kidding. But that is what I would equate the idea of a "college shower" to. If you have a graduation party or not, there was time to get a summer job to buy what you wanted to take to college with you. It goes along with my theory that kids today expect too many handout and don't know the value of working and money. But that is a another subject. Sorry I was a scholarship kid, I worked full time summers to earn money for college essentials and Part time during the school year to have spending money. My summer job was at factory sweating off my tail in 100 degrees plus tempatures. I did because it was double what my friends were making and it taught me what my life would be like if I did not get a college degree. (I made as much money people working there for 25 years and had families to support. It was a real wake up call.) I give the mom credit though, it was an innovative idea. It will just take some time for us to warm up to the idea.

Don't feel stupid at all. I had finally decided to let my dh have the final call since it's his sibling and I would have gone to keep the peace.
Well I asked him tonight what I should RSVP and he said "no way" actually the were a lot of other adjectives thrown in but I can't say them here.

Seems like when my niece graduated my dh and his 2 other siblings (4 total) pitched in and brought my niece a brand new, state of the art laptop and printer for her. His sister (my sister in law) took her and 3 of her friends up to NYC to dinner and to see the Lion King, So now every one in his family is mad at his brother and sister in law for hosting this greed fest. My mother in law is livid saying that the family was extremely generous and she shouldn't need a $%^#@ thing.

I'm being a good little wife and staying out of the way. :rolleyes1 I'm willing to bet I get a call saying it will either be cancelled or very few family members will be there.

Thanks every one for making me feel less like the evil step wife.

I will have three going to school this year. The youngest is starting kindy. Maybe I should host a "Back to School" school supply shower. Ahh yes I think I should pass on that exprense to family.:rotfl:

Wow first the thread on bringing meat to BBQ, paying to attend birthday parties, now a High school graduation shower. I have truly heard it all!

I guess I am in the minority here but I think that if it is in lieu of a graduation party that it is a good idea. People never know what to give as a graduation gift and if they can buy a set of sheets, laundry supplies, or a desk lamp instead of wondering what to get I am all for it.
