High School Graduation gift ideas

We have two family friends graduating from high school this year. I know in the past I've seen some great gift ideas posted here that are reasonable priced. The ones I can think of were for kids going away to college and these two will be commuting from home to community college the first two years. I'd love to start a thread with some great gift ideas-I'm sure I'm not the only one who will need to get some graduation gifts soon.

How about a gas card to help with the transportation cost or a giftcard to their school bookstore.

Cash is always appreciated! But I agree that gift cards for gas or fast food/coffee places near the college would be great too. If you want an actual package they can open, what about a wallet/wristlet/ID holder keychain thingie (depending on whether it's a boy or girl).

I was originally going to just give them cash. I have a dd who is a sophmore in college and she got a lot of cash and gift cards to Bed Bath and Beyond. They won't need it to a place like that but a gas card is a good idea and every student needs those little id holder/wallet thingies. Thanks

I'm hoping my senior gets mostly cash or gift cards to put toward miscellaneous he'll need for his dorm room, etc. I was also thinking gift cards to Starbucks, Subway, etc.

GC are a great idea but here are some other wrapped present suggestions:

A laptop case/bookbag/backpack
USB Jump Drives or portable hard drive - so they can back up all those oh so time consuming papers
A GPS (Sounds expensive but DH needs a new one and we found some refurbs for as low as $50)
a printer

And we all complain about the cost of school supplies as the kids return to school so how about...paper, pens, pencils, etc. or just a GC to staples.

I normally like to give an actual gift, but for hs grads, I think cash is the most useful and appreciated gift.
