High School Class Rings?

DD17 really wants one, but I'm not sure she'd take care of it. I've let her wear mine, which I haven't worn in probably 20 years or more (I graduated HS 25 years ago), but she was really careless with it-I found it laying on her bed in her bedroom, so I took it back. I was surprised she wanted one, because she doesn't wear jewelry and is very careless and doesn't seem to want the jewelry she already owns.

Josten's has a great reputation. They made the Olympic medals for some of the Olympiads held in the US. They also made my college ring, which still looks nice after 20 years.

My personal belief is that a high school ring is a waste of money if the student is continuing on to college. Once he/she graduates from college, they will want a college ring that they can wear well into adulthood.

It is DS's senior year. He got the "2015" and his name on one side of the ring and on the other side he has the mascot with the word "Mascot" over it because he is the high school mascot.
:)

I think if he would have gotten it his junior year it would have looked identical to the one we ordered this year. However, if he would have gotten it earlier, like Sophomore year, it would have been totally different.

Dd is the same way about her Letterman jacket. She loves it and wears it as much as possible. She will definitely get her money's worth out of it.

Plus, it was less than $200. The school paid $75 for each student.

nice move on the school's part!:thumbsup2 my kids were just thrilled when their high school approved a petition to create a lettering opportunity for kids in band or choir. it provided them and many others who are not into sports but put in tremendous hours/were honored with selection to bi-county or state groups to receive lettering recognition.

Crazy that people had to pay for their letterman jackets! We got the jacket itself and the patch for free. We only had to pay if we wanted our Last name on the back and a nick name under that. I got mine through JROTC my freshman year (only 5 of us lettered our freshman year from JROTC but we were on the competition teams and place so we auto lettered per our department rules) and I also lettered in FFA and NHS. For NHS you were eligible for the jacket only the patch.

All 3 of our kids got rings - from Jostens. They all still wear them most of the time. But not always. I really can't remember what company my ring came from (sorry, it was a loooooog time ago ;)). But, for some reason, I think it was also Jostens.

Jostens is great. We've had to replace/fix both our son's rings. One because he grew after he got it (well, they get them as juniors in HS, and he didn't get his growth spurt until after graduation), and the other because the stone (which had a image in it) had gotten cloudy.

No charges for ring fixes. Yay!!

Two of mine got class rings, one from a local jeweley, one from Walmart. DD21 wears hers beautiful Walmart ring every day. DS28 wears his occasionally. He's a welder, so he doesnt wear any jewelry at work.

From what I understand, they used to do that here years ago but had to stop for budget reasons. The jacket, name, and just a couple of patches cost me around $240, which is why I gave him the choice between that and the ring. He does love that jacket, but left it at home when he went to college because it would just scream "FRESHMAN" on campus. :thumbsup2

Did your child want one? Where did you order it?

My son shocked us when he said he wanted one. He is all about bling, but we were just surprised. I made him promise that he would actually wear it before we dropped the $ on it.

He got the Jostens order form, and I messed around with different rings. Then a few people said to check Walmart.

We ended up going through Jostens because they had the ring type he wanted, plus we figured if the company was good enough to do professional sports teams rings, they were probably one of, if not, the best. The price would have been close ($30 difference) to Walmart anyway.

We ended up going with the Jostens T31 ring design.

I got my class ring from Jostens as a student also. Don't know where it is at now, but I loved it and wore it constantly.

We didn't get our son one. But that is because his team won the football state championship a couple of years ago and he has the state championship ring that cost a small fortune.

The coaches designed it with Jostens and they are huge, gaudy and have so many crystals on them, they put a superbowl ring to shame. Except these are crystals and not diamonds. The boys love them, lol. The rings started at a bit over $600 and went up from there depending on the metal. No way were we going to by another ring.

The boys tend to wear these rings to prom and any other school function. However, actual class rings are not very popular among the boys. Not sure about the girls.

I have to give Jostens credit. They have been fantastic in honoring the guarantee on the rings. A few of the rings have had crystals fall out and they have fixed the rings quickly.

All three of my kids do have their letter jackets. Swimming and academics for the oldest two and the youngest lettered in football and academics.

The jackets are all gathering dust.

Culture in our high school is that only the band actually wears their own letter jackets. The students that lettered in sports don't usually wear them. For the football players, the girlfriends wear the jackets around school. At the games, it is usually the Moms with the jackets on.

Ours are around $165. We get the patches, pins and the letters for free. We have to purchase the jacket, the name, the class year, and any other ornamentation you want such as having the mascot on the back.

Yeah, DD21 wanted a letter jacket, but we were already booked for a cruise so she decided she didn't want the jacket and the ring . Besides, she didn't think she would wear the jacket past her sophomore year in college.

DS loved the class rings with all the crystals on them, the kind that resemble a Superbowl ring.

The ring that he ordered is the style that has the crystals, but without them. It still has the look of that type of ring without all the bling. It is not a traditional style of class ring, which will make it very unique. I know he will get a lot of classmates asking about it, because it looks different than a traditional ring looks like.

Dd graduated last year and had no desire for one. I had two nephews who graduated in different states and they did't want them either. I don't know of anyone who's gotten one in recent years. Josten's still goes to the high school but they aren't really a "thing" any more.

I got my school ring at a Jeweler. I believe it is an ArtCarved. My fingers were so small the school company would not fit me because the stone could not be guaranteed and they are forever guaranteed.

When it was time for my daughter to get her we were going through a hardship. The school (All girls) have graduates return rings when they don't wear them any more. My daughter had the same small finger problem. When they presented her ring it was 50 years old, 18karat gold, and beautiful. It was inscribed with the original owners initial and my daughters and the date was exactly 50 years apart.

We were able to get our son his, Jostens very expensive. He still wears it in college.

DM, DSis, and I have class rings.

Technically, mine isn't from my alma mater. I ended up moving my senior year and had to go to a different HS, and I never got around to having my ring changed (I got mine from Herff Jones, and my other high school did Jostens, so I don't think they would be able to change my ring). From what I remember, I had my class ring ordered by the end of my sophomore year, and I received it half-way through my junior year, so I did not get much wear out of it.

I would wear my class ring now, but it doesn't fit. I dropped at least two ring sizes over my senior year, and the ring can no longer securely fit around my finger. I'm hoping that I could find a nice necklace chain for the ring and wear it that way.

My dd is a senior and she didn't want one. I was floored when they sent home the info and she said not to bother, but :thumbsup2

I got one and wore it some, but eventually lost it. I think they are very overpriced for what they are and in retrospect would have rather had an equivalent piece of non-school jewelry.

I didn't get one from my high school and I don't regret it. I don't think I would wear it. I don't think my college even offered them. I don't remember seeing them.
